1969 Jeep Cj5 Dash

So the dash on my newly purchased '69 CJ5 is a piece of swiss cheese. I am planning on going to my local sheet metal shop and having a new dash made that is closer to what the original looked like. Anyone have a picture of an original '69 dash so I can see what gauges and switches were on there from the factory?

 

maybe just get a blank one made, and drill the holes as you need?

 

I was thinking about that but I want to try and keep it as true to original as possible. I know it has a spot for the speedo (which also has the fuel and engine temp gauges) and then it has a switch for the lights and the wipers but other than that I am at a loss for what it should look like. Using the old dash as a template is difficult because I don't know which holes were original versus which ones were added after the fact.

 

I can post a pic of my 69 when I get home, but I don’t know which holes are original on not.

 

Anything you could do would be great, like I said, I am working with a piece of Swiss cheese right now

 

Once you discover the factory holes, maybe the metal shop could patch the original? I've seen some nice work revamping original dashes.

 

Left to right,
Headlight switch, unknown hole (didn’t have a wiper switch when I got it, maybe here?). Hazard switch, wiper switch (the switch I bought was sloppy in the above mentioned hole so I moved it here, where there was a toggle switch for aux lights.
Next hole had the manual choke (replacement is here, installation coming soon!).

At about 25 mph on the speedo is the cigarette lighter, 15 mph is the ignition switch and the hole low left of that used to have a push button for ignition. It failed so I replaced the old switch and button with the switch mentioned above. It looks like there is a plug left of ignition, no idea?.

Hope that helps, I have no Idea what is correct or which holes are factory.

Dash Board Assembly Less Switch & Control Holes 1966-1971 CJ5, CJ6

 

I think that looks like an older dash.

 

The dash has the steering column Mount fabricated in to it and the hole for the glove box has some unique bends.

Double D Fabricating makes a very good replacement dash.

If you get a price of sheet metal and weld on it, you will have to deal with metal distortion

 

How so? No holes for controls, pretty sure the cluster and glove box hole location did not change over the lifetime of early-intermediate Jeeps. Steering position unchanged M38A1-'71.

 

On my original view I thought the weld spots by the cluster were holes like the earlier dash with four holes. Upon a re-look I see they are the studs welded on the back. As always you are spot (welded) on.

 

My 69 dash has a heater push/pull cable control knob on the left of the steering wheel, so that could be what that empty hole is for. It controls the flap in the air duct box mounted to the firewall.

Here's some more info.

This is the dash in my mostly unmolested '69. It's a pretty basic Jeep with factory plugs in lots of the holes. The Silver knob is for an aftermarket heater control valve a previous owner added. The small hole below the ignition switch looks like it has factory paint. Not sure if it's original or not:

If they can fab a new panel with the steering column support, windshield latch serrated plates, and the bent-to-the-inside glove box hole for $179 please send me their contact info. I have a lot of work for them.

 

Interesting to learn the heater was an option. I wonder if my 69 CJ5, being built in Canada, the heater was std equipment? I can't imagine using it in winter otherwise.
