first off, I can’t believe you saw the spring was missing! So thank you again for pointing that out.

I found this spring in the box of parts the PO gave me when I bought the Jeep.

Would this happen to be the missing return spring?

That spring looks close to what came on my Jeep. There should be a little tab up at the front of the bell housing. It’s attached by one of the dust cover bolts. Someone here will have a pic they can share.

I disconnected the clutch cable from the fork so I could move it forward and backward in order to get a feel for when it engaged the clutch fingers one way and feel it hit the back of the case in the other.

how stiff is that movement supposed to be? The spring I pictured above takes 9lbs to pull back when measured on a fish scale and that spring will not pull the fork all the way when installed.

The spring should be enough to pull the release bearing away from the clutch fingers. Typically there is very little resistance to that, since the release bearing slides freely on the sleeve that extends from the bearing retainer. Some friction, but no great force.

Thanks. I can barely move it all the way forward using two fingers.

Without the cable, the lever and bearing should move free, maybe minimal resistance sliding on the bearing retainer.
The spring should ensure that the bearing is not touching the clutch.
At least that’s what I think. Looking forward to other’s replies as I’m sure they know.

On a positive note, I found out why my backup lights don’t work :)

Maybe you'll be lucky and find it's only old dirty, thick grease or such that's keeping it from sliding easily.

I think I’m just going to go ahead and bite the bullet and drop the transmission and fix everything right rather than trying to take a short cut and just having to redo it later and having to worry about it failing when I’m driving it.

Here is a picture of how the return spring is set up on mine. The transmission is of course is different but the concept is the same.

thank you. Mine is missing the bracket that attaches to the bell housing but that’s a simple thing to make.

My CJ6 F134 has the spring but I'm missing the wrench!

Ok, so I have scissor jack with board supporting oil pan and transmission ratchet strapped to a HF transmission jack.

all bolts removed from bell housing.

is there anything else I need to be aware of / do before I remove the bolts holding the cross member?

I’m assuming I don’t need to do anything with the starter.

Starter is okay where it is.
Speedometer cable and clutch cable all disconnected?
It is also nice to remove the clutch cable guide bracket from the drivers side of the transfer case. It likes to get hung up on stuff.
That’s all I can come up with.

Got all of the cables, driveshaft, exhaust, etc disconnected and out of the way.

I just removed the 4 bolts holding the crossmember to the frame.

so what’s the secret to getting the transmission to disengage from the engine? Do I pry it away from the block?

Supporting the transmission evenly with the engine and wiggling/pulling back usually works fairly well. Remember that the input shaft splines and the clutch disc are meshing so that needs to separate smoothly.

Well, I have gotten it to move this far so far but that seems to be as far as it wants to come. It has cleared the pilot stubs.

I did overlook this support bracket for the transfer case on the passenger side just above the cross member. Before I cut the bolt, I wanted to confirm that this actually needs to be removed. That bolt appearing to bolt to the frame does seem to actually be going through the frame on the other side. I can’t find the head of the bolt on the other side.
