I have a 1970 CJ5 w/V6. Trying to find out what rear end it has. The numbers on the tag are 994175

If it is still stock, then it will have a Dana 44 rear end. If it is an early '70 model then it will have 19 spline, two piece axle shafts. If it is a mid to late '70 model, then it should have 30 spline flanged axle shafts.

No part listing for that number in the '71 parts manual. There is however a 994185, flanged 4.55 ratio used on DJ5's.

Actually, except for leftovers, the Flanged D44 began showing up in early 1970 model year. At first ~'70-'72 it had a passenger side drop and from '72-'75 it was centered. After '75 it was the centered AMC 20.:v6:

It has other numbers, ratio and teeth. Just didn't know if it was a Dana 44.
Date on jeep is August 1970

If there is a nut at the center of each rear wheel, it's a splined two-piece axle. If not, it's flanged. The flanged axle is more desirable. It's a Dana 44, regardless.

The ratio should also be on the tag, 3.73 or 4.88.
