I'm rewiring a 73 CJ5, and I'm trying to figure out the transmission mounted wires - the wiring diagram shows the spark switch and backup light switch wires to be mounted on the transmission, and when I got under it to take out the old, there's a connector laying on top of the trans, not connected - and I can't see where it connects... Anyone have any info on where these wires connect?

Connector? Not the connector that goes to the backup light switch?

Take the floor panel off and you can see the connectors.

Look at the wire colors on your diagram. Don't depend on the diagram from a Haynes or Chiltons manual. If you don't have the '73 TSM, there's a '74 TSM at www.oljeep.com - that should be nearly the same as a '73.

Thanks - I have the 73 TSM, and couldn't tell the colors, but have now pulled out the connector to see what it all may be... Can't take the floor panel off in this Jeep, and I think it does go to the backup switch, but I don't know where it terminates on the transmission, as its not plugged in right now... The other is still connected on the upper driver's side of the tran, looks like it would be the spark switch.

You may have to get a mirror as the switch should be on the top and passenger side. Kinda hard to see from underneath.

You don't have the take the floors up - just the transmission cover that the boot is in.

Why can't you tell the colors? Are you colorblind (many people are), or can't you read the diagram?

The transmission harness has 3 wires. They are all taped together. 2 go to the backup light switch which is on top, passenger side, rear. The 2 wires attach to a connector that simply slides onto the 2 prongs of the backup switch. Both wires are the same color as I recall. the 3rd wire of a different color goes to the spark switch - top, drivers side, rear.

Valid question but the wires could be coated in grease, or have faded to a point where it is difficult if not impossible to tell the original color. Run into this all the time on older vehicles.

Thanks, got it - not color blind, just couldn't tell through the grease and didn't have a light at that point. They are the backup switch. Next need to find the connector on the transmission. Sounds like I'll be able to get to it now that I have an idea where it is - rear passenger side... Will look tomorrow with light and a mirror.
