I hope someone can help new to old jeeps but loving it.

I have a 1965 CJ6 Tux with F4 134 t90 trans side shift great condition. The T90 trans which is where the problem comes in.....Stuck in 1 gear was driving lost second messed with the linkage got stuck in Reverse messed with it some more lost 1 and R only 2 and 3. Tried to drive home it shifted back to 1 and that is where it still is stuck in first.....

Questions, could this be a linkage problem (it seems to be moving things the way it supposed to just wont go in the other gears. or is this a fork problem inside the gear box.

I had a 1964 Ford where the linkage would get messed up and you could straighten it out by moving them back in place by hand this does not seem to be the case here.

Also if this is a problem that can happen again how does one prevent this.

Thankful for any help I can get

    MY TUXs IS STUCK>>>>>>>LOL

    Welcome from Boston.

Sure, it could be a linkage issue. This is definitely the most likely scenario. Balky linkage is a very common problem with a column shift manual.

Get under the jeep and take the linkage free from the shift arms on the transmission. There will be two shift arms - 1-R (rear) and 2-3 (front). You should be able to move both arms back and forth into each gear. Putting the tranfer case into neutral may make it easier to shift into each gear. The center position on both arms is neutral. Don't put the transmission into two gears at once, ie R and 2nd.

If you cannot shift the gears by hand, Take the floor up and take the top cover off of the transmission, and look inside. With the floor panel off, you can look down in the transmission and move the shift arms while you are looking. You can do this first, before you take the shift arms loose, if you'd rather.

So take the floors off and take a look at what's going on. Also watch the linkage while someone tries to shift, where the linkage exits the steering column and goes under the Jeep to the transmission.

I suggest you get the FSM (factory service manual) for your Jeep. It will help you a lot. They are available for a modest price as reprints from the Jeep parts retailers - an example: http://thejeep.com/shop/TECH+MANUAL...ECH+MANUAL+CJ3B+CJ5%252F6+12V+4+%2526V-6.html

Ok got everything apart and it appears that the fork that shift between 1 and R is broke off. I think it is deep in the tranny but wont know till I pull it apart.

Question is how hard is a fork for a side shift gonna be to find I appear to becoming up with a blank on the internet any suggestions

Thanks so much Tim for the suggestion it has really helped me ID the problem. Pic attached[IMG]

Take a look on the Forward Control forum. All the FC 150's and most of the FC 170's use the side shifted T90. I think those also found their way into Studies and perhaps other Kaiser creations like the Henry J. All should fit. I probably have a few in the bone pile but am not going to have time to look for awhile.

    Glad I could help.

Unlike the top shift versions, the main shaft will have to come out to get to the shift forks. A big job. If it shifted befoe, it's likely that the fork and arm are down in the oil now, and they may be reusable or repairable.

Also try Herm for parts www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com - he seems to have a lot of such oddball stuff. There are other sources for used parts, like R&P - also in Oregon - and J&W in Antelope CA.

I have a couple side shift t-90s if you really need one for parts. Herm can build you one no problem. Give him a call and see what he can do for you.
