Getting ready to do the CJ, T3-C and wagon. I was considering the POR-15 but after talking to the guy at Mastercoats, I'm pretty impressed. Looking for feedback on the actual process and and longer term results.

No experience with Mastercoat, but I'm not a fan of POR15.

Tried POR15 myself. I wont use it again. Was not impressed with the adhesion, and it cures to a super smooth gloss that causes adhesion issues for the top coat.

I've had issues with POR-15 as well, but in it's defense, I did not use their metal prep spray, Actually I don't remember if it was available 16 yrs ago??? But it is just coming off in sheets with rust underneath. I am planning a restoration soon and am looking for something to get me thru until then that doesn't cost $40 qt. So far nothing.

I used POR-15 on my frame and other small components and had a different experience because I'm impressed with its adhesion. It's been 4 years and still looks great. However, I did use the prep chemical that promotes surface rust (POR-15 is designed to adhere to rust, not bare metal.) My Jeep is a garage queen that never sees any real use so I can't say how it would stand up to the day in the life of a real Jeep. I agree with the earlier comment, though, that you cannot top coat it despite what the company says! Anything you top coat it with will peel right off.

This Mastercoat® Permanent Rust Sealer – MasterSeries Coating looks similar if not identical to Aluthane. A little funny that they would offer a thicker version as a filler - one of Aluthane's advantages is that it is a high-solvent coating that covers very well in a thin coat. The solvent enables the MCU binder to penetrate the rough surface deeply and bind to an imperfectly prepared surface. Most of the time I use Aluthane as a top coat, but the company claims it can be top coated with just about any other paint, including water-based latex. Indeed, I have used Aluthane as a seal coat over wood rot reconstructed with heavily diluted liquid epoxy and Duraglass, and top coated with gloss latex. A few year now, and no apparent change visible. No need for additional "tooth" for top coats. My feeling is that a thicker product would be less effective as a seal coat.

The Master Series stuff may be just as good, but I'm familiar with the Aluthane product. Same price within a nickle, Aluthane from tax-free New Hampshire, Master Coat from New Jersey.

Used por-15 on my projects. I find if there's an issue it wasnt prepped right. You have to do EVERY step outlined in the instructions. If you don't it wont stick. I did my frame on my pickup restoration and when i sold it 4 yrs later it looked like the day i did it
