Holes In My Tailgate

Hello everyone
I’m trying to figure out what the holes in my tailgate are for? I added a couple of pictures to get your thoughts. I was assuming the holes were for a spare tire mounting bracket but I can’t find the mounting hole dimensions. I’m not sure on the year as I think the tub is 72 to 74.

The holes were put there for some PO's (previous owner's) purpose. Somebody had a bracket for something and got out the drill and drilled them. Not factory. If you have to know what exactly they were for, you'll have to ask the PO.

 

Thanks, I gues i’m Trying to figure out what to put there to cover the holes. LOL

 

I purchased a set of rubber grommets when trying to fill the holes in my firewall and dash.

This is an example of what it looks like on the dash. The plug is just above the lighter socket. Sorry it is sideways.

I didn't know it was unavailable. It was $10. It really works on all the firewall holes. Looks better than two fender washers and a bolt. I have some holes in the windshield frame where the rifle mount was mounted that I plan to plug up as well.

On the tailgate it would have a low profile rather than a bolt in the hole.

 

Check on ebay, there is a bunch available..

someone had a gas can bracket on there

 

That would certainly be my first guess. You seem to have firm evidence in those dimensions.

Fortunate that the tailgate metal was not torn by the weight.
