Fuel Pump Block Off Plate

Hello all,

I left my mechanical pump in but have now put in a electric pump. As i fired it up today for the first time since all my work on the jeep, i notice that without the mechanical pump hooked up you can really hear it clicking. Took me a while to figure it was that as i thought it was a stuck lifter or something. It appears 198's have the same fuel pump gasket as the 225 but i havent found a plate for 225 either. I know many of you are running electric fuel pumps so wondering if anyone knows where to order a plate.

It wouldn't be hard to make one but, you could check if a block off plate for a Buick V8 would work. Might be the same size. Just guessing here but it would probably worth a shot. Not sure where you'd find one either. Gotta be out there somewhere.

Many any block off plate would work from any engine. Mechanical fuel pumps don't differ greatly, in general, in basic design. At least as far as the how they mount to the engine.

 

Probably because its taking a full hit from the cam on every stroke, due to the diaphragm spring having no fuel back pressure to keep it pre-loaded. Interesting observation.

 

The fuel lubricates the pump guts. Take away the lube and you get noise. Plan on making your own block off plate or adapting something from another engine. Should be something from another application that will fit or can be easily modified but I doubt you find one listed for your specific application. Too obscure.

 

take the gasket and see if a chevrolet SB will work
or as nick suggested . take gasket and make one

 

That won't work but I'm pretty sure a BB Chevy will.

Jon, please clarify the source of clicking. When I read your post I assumed you were talking about the electric pump clicking. Pete L brings up a good point. So what is clicking?

My '68 has had an electric since I bought it. Very noisy. I plan to convert back to mechanical and may keep the electric as a back-up/primer.

 

My electric fuel pump is a different sound, but the clicking appears to come from the mechanical pump that is not connect.

Look on RockAuto - the fuel pump gasket for a 225 is a FelPro 6579. The same as dozens of other applications, including the big block Chevy. And all three of my AMC Jeeps.

 

So, it is possible and perhaps even likely that a plate for any of those engines that use the same gasket would work.

 

Mmm. I have little doubt. I would risk $5 to see. Summit sells their own version for $1 less.

 

198 vs 225 is the same?

 

Probably. Look up the fuel pump gasket number on RockAuto. You can do it. I didn't realize it's a 198.

(later) I did not find a 198 gasket, but the 215 is the same number. the 198 is probably the same as the 215. If the fuel pump is the same, the gaskets are the same. The listings likely leave it out because they don't know, and it's not worth their time to find out. Donny might know if the fuel pumps are different.

 

yeah i was playing around with that the other day before i posted. I was thinking that it could work. Just wanted to know what other 198's or others knew since i know electric fuel pumps are popular.

It also appears from a glance that the shape is quite common so maybe its more standard in other motors. Dunno....

 

The 198, 225, and 215 V8 all share the same front timing cover and oil pump. I think the big block Chevy blanking plate is the one you need. Its too many years since I've blanked one off, but the one I used was something I had laying around, along with a few big blocks.
Some of the eccentric rings on the front of the cam were soft metal and wore a bad groove from the fuel pump arm, causing a noticable loud ticking noise to let you know something was amiss.

I took my gasket and traced the outline onto some 1/8" metal, then drilled the holes and cut it out and smoothed it up. Fit perfectly. Later used the same plate on an International Scout 152CID, fit perfectly as well. A little sealant with the gasket it and it will keep it from leaking. I did use shorter bolts though.

 

OR... you can pull off you pump, and using a hack saw or grinder, with a cutting wheel... cut off the arm or lever... so nothing is touching the cam and nothing is moving in the pump.... and put it back on.... that way you don't have to buy anything more.. to solve the problem...

 

I have a 198 with an electric fuel pump installed by the PO. I tried to see what they did to block off the old mechanical pump, but I can’t find the exact location of the old pump. Everything I’m reading says right front of the engine, but I don’t see anything resembling a fuel pump or block off plate in that area.
