I carry a 27 spline drive flange in the tool box. Haven’t needed it yet..... but I have a soft right foot.

Yes, 2.5" tubes on the 30 vs 2.25" tubes on the 27.

Dang, they were $84 when I bought them. I abused my Jeep pretty well and liked the slider part. I am sure you can find something less expensive.

they also are only for one axle an don't come with the UBolts. I bet if you counted up the hours making these its probably not a bad deal... But..

I bought my U bolts from Round Bend U-bolts - Stengel Bros. Inc.

Is it possible to simply elongate the holes in the spring plates? I see the wtb ad for the 79 spring plates. The 79 will have front springs that are 2" wide as apposed to the early 1 3/4 spring. An intermediate (72-75) should have the right axle diameter and spring width but I am not sure if the shocks are in front of or behind the axle.

If you are keeping the 1.75" wide springs with a 30 axle, you need something like the intermediate spring plates. However, the intermediates move the shock to behind the axle, so that needs to be addressed. You can't just swap sides, because the right side inner u-bolt goes over the axle housing casting, and is wider, making left and right side-specific. As an additional complication, some of the intermediate Jeeps used 7/16" u-bolts and some used 1/2" (later). The later u-bolts are 3-ea 3.06" wide and 1-ea 3.75" wide.

I expect you could find a machinist/welder to make these parts for you, if you look around.

I was able to use the Rocky Road plates with shocks in front of the axles because the plates have 2 mounting locations. I tried to "wallow" out my D27 plates with very little luck.

Is this something as simple as welding threaded Rod to the front side of the spring hanger?

A threaded rod is usually soft metal unless you can spec something like 4140. You would be better to get quality long bolts and cut the heads off to fit/weld. I've used grade 8 bolts for this purpose.

This is key. You want the shock eye to ride on the round stock, and only enough threads exposed for the nut to cover. I like to space them so the nut bottoms (tightens) on the end of the treads so the shock isn’t tight on the stud. If the rubber can’t move, it’s more apt to snap the stud or shock’s eye.
