Fuel Tank Issues

I need serious help with a fuel tank repair or replacement with a fuel tank for a 1967 CJ 5. I have received one suggustion which would involve cutting of the frame. We live in pretty rugged terian and I am not crazy about this... the tank with a problem simply has a broken fuel pick up line or a hole in it. But there is no way to get into the tank. The fuel pump line connects to the little hole next to the fill hole in the photos below. The tank measures 22 1/4" X 16" X 9". The frame is 25" from side to side.

Any suggestions?

The problem is there isnt room the frame is 25" and the tank is 25 1/4".

if it were me, and the tank does have the problem you describe, I think I would put an outlet on the bottom or bottom side of the tank.
A radiator shop or good welder could do it for you.
Be very careful welding on a tank that's had fuel in it.............BOOM

 

are you going off dimesnions from a website?? there is a small lip around the center of the tank (vertically) that sits on the frame horns as they flare out to the end. so the dimension is wider than the frame itself (the inner part of the c channel) bt it sits inside it... or atleast thats how i remember it.

 

I am using the measurements from several websites. Some of the photos show a lip and some do not. I crawled under it tonight and some of the modifications you describe have already been completed. If the measurement is at the lip then it will work....

I think that we all agree - the CJ tank will fit. If that tank was under the Jeep, the hard work has been done.

However, that's a perfectly ok tank, and you know that it fits and you don't have to make any more modifications to mount it. I'd try to figure out a way to draw fuel from the bottom of the tank, either by adding a fitting at the bottom (per Jim's advice) or by adding a tube through the existing hole or through the top, beside the float/sending unit.

Where are you located? If there's a member nearby, they may be able to help you in person. <edit> Oops - sorry "Sunny Central Oregon" in sig. On the Columbia Plateau?

 

What type of sending unit does it use. The CJ sender has the pick-up with the sender. Could a universal sender w/pick-up built in work?

 

I was thinking that - it would be a neat solution. The sender hole looks to have the 5-screw mounting typical of the early senders and the S-W universal senders. I thought that the early tanks took fuel from the bottom, and the S-W senders don't show a pickup tube. Is there a 5-screw type with a pickup tube?

 

I don't know....if there is, I think that would solve the problem.

 

I am located in a small town called La Pine, 30 miles south of Bend, Oregon - I did find that there is a tank manufacturer in Redmond (45 miles). As for the type of sending unit, I will have to take a look upon returning home. I am fairly certain that the sending unit does not have the tube on it.
