O/D C clip H E L P!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I am in the process of replacing the trans in my sons 1968 cj-5. It is equiped with a worn o/d. There is a large c clip holding the shaft to the mainshaft of the trans and I can not get the SOB out of there. There is a collar over the clip and if I open up the clip enough to make it over the shaft it hits the collar. Does anyone have a trick way of getting this thing out of there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Is this the snap ring you're talking about?

    If it ain't you're doing something Wrong :(.

    If it is you can get it out "reasonably" easily with a proper set of snap ring pliers, just squeeze the little hooked ends togeather. Most people do it with needle noses, most people end up cursing a lot before they get it out :).


    Now, if you're talking about the C clip that holds the bearing ont the Sun gear shaft (this thing)-

    It will come off but it ain't fun, Band-Aids will be needed.

    I spoke with Herm and he gave me the correct way to do it. I had to reassemble the thing and then start over. I now have the correct clip out but the nut you are suppose to remove with the extension will not come out. If it isn't one thing it is another. Oh well, I still like working on them. I can't thank everyone here enough. As usual people on this board step up and always help.

    Per the URL listed by Linckeil,


    * Remove the five bolts that run through the case of the over drive with a 9/16" socket.
    * Pry the over drive case away from the Dana 18 case. Keep in mind that the gasket sealer and the bearing that rides in the plenetary hub assembly may fight a bit.
    * Remove special snap ring that is behind and can be seen through the planetaries. (editorial note. Herm has replacements if you break yours like I did mine!)
    * Remove the special lock washer that is behind the snap ring with some needle nose pliers.
    * Use long 1/2" extension to remove planetary hub assembly from transmission output shaft.
