Yep, there is no difference for a 225 than any other motor. Power source and a coil signal.

Negative. Directions should be included with the tach.

If you don't have instructions..................... how does it wire up? Got a freebie mini-tach, three wires ( black, red & white) Would look just right on the column.. (hijack off)

Correct me if I am wrong, but it should be
    black - ground
    red - power
    white - coil negative side.

I'll try it that way. If the magic smoke doesn't leak out , I'll know I'm good to goR) Thanks

Usually white is dash lights, and there should be a green wire to go to the coil.....

My guess is: White=light Black to neg side of coil Red to 12v power source. And yes, usually the wire to the coil is green.

That was kinda why I wasn't sure. He says he only has black, red, and white. Red must be the one going to the coil then I guess.

Red should be power to the tach. The tach grounds off of the neg side of the coil. That's how it counts the rpms. Ignition points close = ground.

Normally, but he only has three wires here. He might need to take it apart to see if he is missing his coil wire. It's kinda hard to say without looking at it.

What brand tach are we talking about here anyway, that might help.

Little mini tach, appx. 1.5 inch pod style. No name that I can see.......... Also have a lighted one off an early MOTO-SKI snowmobile (remember those?) with a 5 or 6 wire plugged harness. The mini pod is not lighted as far as I can tell unless its internal and is constantly on when power is on.

In that case I would go with my first advice. It is obvious that on the the black should be the ground and one or the other of the red and white should go to power source and negative side of the coil. Some times you just have to set something on fire before you find out the answers.:)
