What goes under the fuel tank?

Discussion in 'Early Jeep Restoration and Research' started by Txjake, Jul 18, 2006.

In other words, is there a material the factory put on the floor underneath the fuel tank on a early CJ5? Sort of a cushioning material or heat guard?

I used to find that the flap out a large truck tire worked pretty good for me. It was available kept vibration to a minimum and kept the tank from moving. Really works pretty well if you have put bedliner inside the body.

I used a large piece of 1/8" rubber stock.

I cut a old serpentine belt and epoxied it to it in strips about 10" apart. Has worked great so far.

I like the strips of rubber idea. This will help eliminate any water from being trapped and rusting out the fuel tank or the floorboard.

  6. I just did the same!

I have a '68 CJ5 that I have had since new. When I removed the gas tank, there wasn't anything between it, and the floor. There was a rubber strip under the metal strap that held the tank in place under the seat, but nothing between it and the floor. I would be careful about putting any type of rubber mat between the tank and the floor only because condensation tends to develop under rubber mats and it will eventually lead to a rust problem. I think that using a couple of small rubber strips would be ok as long as it was sealed in such a way as to prevent condensation or moisture being trapped underneath of it.

I use a well painted (sealed) set of wood blocks in an effort to keep it where it will drain and not hold moisture. We'll see if it works over time.

    I had dead leaves.

I like the rubber strips idea for when I put it back.

  11. My '68 has nothing also. Was thinking of a couple of strips of nylon or the like. Prolly find it at the local hardware store as window molding of something.

My '55 has the original "????" under the tank. I did not inspect it very carefully, but at a glance, it looked like strips of some type of foam or rubber that was pretty dried up. I believe there were 2 to 4 strips of it under there. I will inspect more carefully when the tank is out next time.

Mine had nothing under it when I got it as well.It was rusted though. I used some devcon brushable ceramic to repair it and it hasn't leaked yet other then through the filler neck cap. I got the stuff from where I worked many moons ago (a copper/moly mine)

I asked Rich at Beachwood Canvas once about this, and he didn't recommend anything under the tank because it would hold moisture and promote rusting. Reckon I'll worry about it when the time comes.

I ordered canvas webbing body mount pads, gas tank pads, and gas tank strap pad from Beachwood Canvas a couple of years ago. Now that I am restoring my M38A1, I am thinking of going with rubber instead - I'd hate to install the canvas webbing and start a rusting epidemic in my new floors. Although, I am going to undercoat the bottom of the tub and Rattleguard (Line-X) the inside, so it probably wouldn't hurt anything except the gas tank.

My PO had used a liberal coating of roofing tar. (And I found a penny also... B^)
