    Vehicle is a 1965 CJ5
Current D-train is 225 Dauntless, auto tranny, D18 tcase. I suspect that the tranny/tcase was swapped in from a Commando, but I am not sure of this. I would guess it to be a TH400, there is no bellhousing adapter between the tranny and motor.

The V6 is seized and we would like to swap in a 1992 4.3 TBI motor. We have a auto tranny that came with this 4.3 but it is 2WD.

Q: What year/model Jeeps came with this original d-train?

Q: Should we just swap the 4.3 on to the TH400?

Advanced adapters sells a kit for $289 to adapt a GM motor to this tranny, unless I am reading it wrong.

    adaptor between tranny/transfer?

the tranny length would help, along with casting numbers (if any) and a pic of the oil pan.

Most autos are pretty easy to tag from there pan , If its square with a shaved off corner its most likly a TH350 , The TH400 pan always looked funny to me but I cant remember it well enuff the describe it R)
    Novaks 400 info
plus they have a section on most the other trannies too

More than likely a TH350. A TH400 is too long for a CJ-5, well to be useable.

BTW, FWIW, Commando TH400s used an adapter between the engine and the trans...

All the automatic-equipped Jeeps through 1979 (except the earliest Wagoneers) had a GM TH400. Up through about 1974 these used an adapter ring. The same transmission (Buick nailhead style) was used with the 350, 225, 327, 232, 258, 304 and 360 engines with different adapter rings.

If it's a TH400 from a Commando, you'll see an obvious 2-3" thick ring between the trans and engine.

There's no adapter ring for Chevy though. IF it's a TH400, you can take a Chevy TH400 and put your output shaft and adapter into it, or you can take the guts of your transmission into a case from a Chevy - then it will bolt up to the 4.3L. There's also a thin adpater plate sold by Summit/Jegs that lets you swap between BOP (the 225 pattern) and the Chevy pattern, but they are reported to be rather flimsy.

BTW - no Jeep ever came with that drivetrain: 225, TH400, D18. The Jeepster Commando (66? - 71) came with the 225, TH400, D20. That combo could be wedged into a CJ, but the rear driveshaft would be verrrry short. No CJ-5 ever came with an automatic, for this reason.

The rear shaft is about 11" long. I'm still waiting for pics to verify the pan. I am assuming now that someone swapped in an auto to go with the stock :v6: and 18, which would match the offset rear 44. I am hoping that I can swap that adapter onto a chev housing and mount a 20 onto it.

I'll mention that the low range ratio of the D18 is lower than the D20

D20 also has the centered rear output, makes adding a centered-pumpkin axle on the rear end a snap.

This would be the reason to go with the 20.

    Just call me Captain Obvious.

I thought someone asked why would someone want to do a D18 to D20 swap. I offered up the reason.

Reading back now, I see I skimmed too quickly through the topic.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I kinda like having both pumpkins on the same side of my rig, instead of one centered and one of to the left or right.

True, me too, but it does limit your choice of axles depending on your needs and desires.

my vote would be to toss it into the furnace and melt it down, but I'm very anti-automatic transmission.
