Either Or approach to Ring Gear

I have now realized that the "new" flywheel that I installed quite a while ago, is a 124 and not the 129 tooth ring gear. The beast is all together. What is the recommended approach to get the flywheel out? (Pull the engine, or drop the transmission/transfer case)??

Why not just change the starter to one that will work with the 124 tooth ring gear?

From what I have read here, the 124 is the flat-head version with a completely different bellhousing. (the starter shop that has been its custodian was completely unable to match anything up.)

I think I'd pick the engine, simply because you can change the flywheel on the floor of the shop, rather than changing it in the Jeep. Plus a lot of the work to get the engine out can be done from above, and the trans work all has to happen from below (on the cold, hard floor).

    Really, I think it's close to a toss-up.

Change the drive gear on the starter. As long as the bore is the same it's easily changed out. If it isn't ...machine it.:v6:

This sounds like the easiest way to procede. Just remember that when the starter gives up the ghost, you'll have to change out the drive gear before you send the old starter to the trash heap or your FLAPS for core exchange. Good luck.

Where do I get the "new" gear from?
