Hey all, Im looking for everyones opinion on whats the best way to degrease your engine while its still in the jeep. Fixing to start a massive cleanup and also im looking at Linexing the floorboards and i saw where there is a spray on anti skid treatment thats not Linex anyone have any experience with this? Just wondering if it will hold up. Its alot cheaper and looks alot easier to apply to all the tight areas.

A couple of cans of spray-on degreaser, followed by a trip to the quarter car wash, would be my first attempt.

No experience with the floor coatings - I like carpet.

I apply dawn dish washing soap un deluted. I like to apply with an undercoating spray gun or a brush. Let it sit for a couple minutes scrub with a brush if you can, then rinse off with a presure washer or a strong stream from a garden hose. Our local fire dept/ hasmat team recomends and uses dawn dishwashing liquid as a degreaser. They say its the best product out there. They know chemicals, its there job hazerdous material clean up. I have been using dawn and it works as well or better than other products I have tried. Good luck with your project Anthony

I used Herculiner from Wal Mart applied with a 4 inch roller on my floors, I used a spray undercoating from Duplicolor I got at Pep boys underneath. The undercoating may be tough enough for the floors.

I was just asking the same question at a local NAPA store yesterday and the sales tech told me that the best product he has found is oven degreaser purchased at the grocery store. He suggested leaving it on overnight for areas with heavy grease layers. Wash off with a power sprayer. He claims it works better than the automotive degreasers. Take his suggestion for what it's worth, but I thought it sounded like it was worth trying.

Simple Green and a trip to the do-it-yourself car wash works pretty good for me. I used to use Gunk, but it leaves a smell.

I second the easy off oven cleaner or a cheap generic from the Walmart then spray it off, may take a couple attempts.

Oven cleaner is caustic, typically lye. Be careful what you spray it on - it will etch aluminum parts.

undercoating doesnt work well on floors, it peels off. I would say purple power, but like tim said about the oven cleaner its caustic and will etch aluminum but works great on grease.

I agree with all the degreasers.
Just dont splash them on yourself.
I always rinse them off before hard spraying.

My secret weapon is using hot water.
I have a profesional pressurewasher for my job, and I hook it up to my hot water and go for it works well.

Simple Green straight from the bottle, use a parts washing brush/putty knife for the big chunks. $.25 car wash for the rinse.

Oh, and warm engines usually end up cleaner than cold ones. ;)

Greased Lightning, Simple Green, Castrol Super Clean all work well. Nickmil

i used a can of gunk on mine, and it smelled like kerosene so i just splashed some on a rag to finish the rest up and it worked ok, but i went through at least two towels doing it that way, its way better to have something you can spray on, but i wasnt about to pour kerosene over my engine!

I agree Castrol Super Clean works well. I also use a Windex window cleaner, the kind that you hook up to a hose, clean out and then fill with water and a nice amount of Dawn dish soap. My engine in my Chevy has 161,000 miles and you would never know it.

I use a product called Oil Eater from Costco. Biodegradeable, no smell and it is not to harsh. It is a concentrate so I dilute it to 50%, spray it on wait then use a pressure washer. No scrubbing, got to love that.

Brake or Carb cleaner and blue paper towels are effective but costly. Ether (eg starting fluid) is also effective and leaves no reside for gaskets and such.

Herm has a spiffy dishwasher-resembling device (but custom) which shoots hot water in all over the place and spins around. Most major shops I hear about (Cat tractor repair) just use hot water.

I usually go once in a while to the .25c wash and crawl under my jeep with the pressure washer. I have yet to figure out how to keep from getting soaked, so I save it for hot days.

    Don't hit the distributor!

For those of you with a Dollar Tree local to you (Dollar Store) they carry some stuff in a spray bottle called "Awesome". It's a buck for a 20-24 oz bottle and it does work real well, especially for the price..... Nickmil

I've tried almost everything worth trying and the best degreaser I've ever used was a product made but Castrol named Super Clean. It cut thru every piece of dirt, oil, grease, brake dust I ever sprayed it on almost instantly. Its biodegradable too.

First time using simple green today. Cleaned up my yj's engine bay pretty good. Just had to do several applications on the extremely greasy valve cover. I found that a long screwdriver and a rag works well on tight spots with caked on grime...Just like how the dentist stuffs cotton balls in your mouth with the forceps...

    I didn't rinse it...just constant wiping.
