Being of rather large stature i have been taking steps to fit myself better into my little Jeep. I have mounted a thin profile seat as low as I can(for now, possibly a gas tank relocation is in the future) and notched the fender out to move the seat back. I still have to kink my neck a bit to see well out the windshield. The later model frames offer a bit more visibilty, but is it worth it? Will the money I spend be worth it? I don't want to put up the money to find i still have the same problem.

    Thanks, Matt

How much do you need? Just using the eyeball, it doesen't look like the late intermediate windshield frame is much more than 2" narrower at the top than an early frame. I'm 6'3" and it makes all the difference on my 75.

made a big difference on my cj6 when I changed from stock to an early 70's W/S.....don't have to look under the metal frame anymore

From what I've heard the aftermarket frames are lighter gauge than the originals, might look for a used one before you spring for a new.....I got 2 that way, one from a jeep wrecking yard, one on a donor jeep I purchased....IMHO

I think you will find a dramatic difference! I had a vent windshield that I came to hate. With the old windshield my eyes looked at the bottom of the windshield wiper motor. I had to scrunch down to see out. I installed a '69' windshield and I couldn't be happier.

Keep in mind that which windshield frame you use, will determine what top you can use. If you go with a 76-up frame, you can use 76-up replacement tops, seems to be more selection at a wider range of prices for the newer tops. 75-down seems more limited, IMO.
Also remember the wipers, they are different configurations also...
And I concur with getting a used windshield frame, there is a Huge jeep only yard in Sacto, I can't remember the name, someone will chime in. They aren't cheap, but you will have a selection.

Does the ECV mean what I think it does? If so, you ought to consider a trip to Mariposa April 5. Matucca doins. I could show you a local trail or two...

IMO Buy a new one. I purchased a used one from a member here to replace my original. When the time came to prep it I discovered the air box was swiss cheese just like my original. A trip to several JYs showed me this was a common problem.

So I bought a new Crown frame, sprayed the interior of the air box w/ Wax Oyl cavity wax and painted the entire exterior. I find little difference in the metal of new vs old just needed tweaking (vents, front fascia). The new frame has all the correct holes and backing nuts.:v6:

Plenty of great info, thanks. I doubt a top will be a concern, maybe a bikini top to keep from getting too sunburned. Wipers? I am not sure how important that is either(if the DOT could hear me now) The ones I have are vacuum actuated and don't really do anything, it would be nice if I had working wipers, but I can figure that out as it comes. Luckily I am in no hurry to get this done so I will take my time and see what I can come up with at the dismantlers before I decide if I am going to buy a new or used one.

Thanks everyone for all your help/input.

..and farfle, satisfactory (Chp. 10 Meek-Stewart)
