  1. I heard today that the bellhousing from my '74 CJ5 258 c.i. can be used on a 360 I have laying around the shop should I decide to go that way. Seemed odd to me that it would but I thought I'd throw it out here just to see if it's so?

The AMC 258 and the AMC V8s have the same bolt pattern for the bell to the block.

Yes. The 360 will bolt up to your bellhousing. All the AMC inline 6s and V8s after mid-year 1970 have the same bell pattern, You'll need a 360 flywheel, and you'll have to change one or both of the the frame towers (motor mounts). If you have the stock 3-speed transmission (T-14), that's not really up to the challenge of 360 power unless you drive the 360 like a 6-cylinder.

  4. Thank you both for the answers, I was hoping it would match up. No, the one I am putting it in has the optional 4 speed transmission, I have the 3 speed in my other '74 behind the factory 304. Now I am on the search for a flywheel.................. lot's of time, I am slowly (at least my wife thinks so) buy the parts a few at a time to remanufacture it. Supposedly ran great the guy said, but I only want to have to put it in once. He said the donor Wagoneer had 159,000 miles, so I think it is probably time anyway. Tim, if I purchase motor mounts for a '74 CJ5 304 are they the same for the 360? Thanks in advance for that answer as well.

Yes, they are the same mounts. All amc v8s are the same externally.

  6. Thank you for the info.
