Somewhere between $100 and $1000 for a basic engine. The rods and crank are likely worth $100 if in good condition. If it's a running, used motor, a lot depends on if and how much it's been bored out. 40 over is the usual maximum, so a 30 over block has to be in good condition or else it's not worth much without possible sleeving.

The motor is out of a 75 jeep wagoneer it is complete from air cleaner to oil pan. It probably runs the automatic probably took a dump. Too bad it ended up in the junkyard it was in good shape body wise and no butchering done to the wiring.

Without it being in a chassis where I could hear it run, I would consider it a "possibly rebuildable" core, and not much else. $200 bux tops, and that would be if it had all the accessory brackets, pulleys, etc.

Now, if I could hear it run, it had no major issues and it didn't burn oil, the $1k price is more like it. 401's are rare, but they're not made of unobtainium.

    YMMV. ;)

like Steve above, without hearing it or tearing into to it to inspect, not worth much to me.....

I agree on some on the statements above, but keep in mind the 401 motors are very difficult to find. It is going to get harder as time goes by too, I believe. What you need to find is someone who really wants it, has the opportunity to inspect it (being it isn't in a vehicle running), and go from there. If it is stock, in good condition, no cracks, not bored over, etc, I'd sell it for at least 800. I paid a little less than that just for a 401 block, but i know their value, are difficult to obtain, and have special plans for it. That is the difference in someone buying it who just thinks it cool, bigblock, raw power, etc. Good Luck! R)

Keep in mind that, if you know what you are looking for, you might find a complete vehicle with a 401 for that amount. They aren't that scarce - they were offered from '74-78 in Cherokees and Wagoneers. Look for a Z-code VIN and check the numbers on the block.
