I have already idle it without the valve cover and did not see anything obviouse except that no mess was made so I need to somehow check oil pump.

ok did a quick compression test and all read about 130 except for the first cylinder counting from firewall side. That one reads about 98. I also looked and the oil is very low so it looks like it is burning more oil than I originally thought because it has no leaks but it does smoke when throttling

Well that eliminates a bad head gasket. Time to look a little deeper.

At this point do you recommend removing the oilpan and look from below?

I also noticed that there is a gap between the pushrod and the roker arm because I am able to move the pushrod up and down slightly.

OK the gap it has is definitely more.

I would. The V8 in my truck made that sound right before a rod cap came off going down the road, somehow the bolt backed out a little bit and then finally broke. The noise came from the rod slapping on the crank until it broke the bolt on one side and bent the rod and cap on the other.

What's the verdict? Have you got it fixed?

Not fixed yet. I have not had a free weekend to devote time to take it apart. Hopefully this weekend I will remove the oil pan and take a look.

I took my tux to town monady to get an inspection and license. Made it about a mile from the house and the rear end locked up. The PO apparently forgot to tell me the pinion bearing was bad. I feel your pain.

Oh man!!! I am sorry to hear that. I am going to stop wheeling until I fix her. This past weekend I went Ocala Florida. They have a wheeling park called Hard Rock and I got to test the TJ's climbing ability.
Hopefully this comming Saturday and Sunday I will be able to tell what is wrong wit the CJ and I will post it back here.

The gears are all ok as is the carrier bearings. $65 woth of pinion bearings later and she goes back together tonight. I have only got to drive it a mile or so and this happened. I really felt like burning it. So far i've been through all the wiring, top end of the f134, front disc conversion, master upgrade, all new brake lines, rear brakes, new seats, new starter, changed all fluids, runs good. What else is in store me thinks.:?

It's the way with old cars. After driving a while you mostly get ahead of the maintenance ...

Otherwise people wouldn't buy new cars! :)

I finally got a chance to work on the CJ and when I removed the oil pan everything looked good until I wiggled the connecting rod bearing cap and it moved like if there was no bearing present. This is the very first piston counting from firewall side where the clacking noise was comming from. I removed the 2 nuts holding the cap and when I removed the cap there was no bearing . The good thing is that the crankshaft and connecting rod/cap have no abrasions at all to the touch. I rubbed my finger thru it all and it is very smooth. I then decided to sift thru the oilpan and found plenty of thin like paper metal shavings. I guess I found the bearing or what's left of it R)
I am glacl that the crankshaft if in good shape.

    Thanks
Now I just need to find out what are the correct size bearing so I can replace them on all 4 rods.

Take another cap off. Size should be stamped on the back side of the bearing. I would have someone mic the crank and rods though. New oil pump while you are at it (more often than not the cause of a failed bearing, other than low oil).

x2:iagree: all it takes is a flat spot on the crank that you may or may not be able to feel to ruin another bearing, would defeniatly replace the oil pump as the trash has went through it already

I had an engine do the same thing with me. I had to pull the crank out and have it turned. While that was being done, I took out the two pipe plugs in the oil galley and with a 12 gage bore cleaner, you wouldn't belive the fine shavings of what was left of the bearing came out!! I would strongly recommend pulling the engine and doing a through cleaning on it---otherwise, when whats left of the bearing goes through your engine, it will score the bearings.
