Bellcrank question

Discussion in 'Intermediate CJ-5/6/7/8' started by SwampRatt, Jul 17, 2008.

I had replaced the complete linkage a last year. Yesterday the "ball joint" snapped at the clutch petal.
Anyway my question: is the Bellcrank on bassackwards and if so would this put un-due stress on the Bellcrank to petal linkage?

I run mine with the long arm down. the long arm should run parallel to the front of the bellhousing

  3. Looks like the bellcrank is in correct. Parts books show shims on the transmission bracket that you add or subtract to get the bellcrank 90 degrees to the frame and / or take any binding out, that could might be binding the bellcrank up.

  4. Oh just double checked mine ,the long arm does run parallel to the front of the bellhousing ! OOOPPPPSSSS

I think the easiest way to tell if it's in backwards is by the location of the zerk fitting. I recall it's supposed to be out in the air, in the gap between the frame and the motor, where you can reach it with your grease gun. Pretty sure the picture shows it backwards - I'm at work and can't look right now though.

JMO - forget the OEM-style joints (they break too often) and use Heim joints.

Looks like mine in the pic is close to straight down, parallel to the bell housing.
The "long" arm is on the side opposite the grease zerk.

I think yours might be 25 or 30 degrees forward of the bellhousing. Heres a pic of mine.

Ah yes. Looks like I need to flip the bell crank so the zerk of inboard and change the alignment if the crank.

  12. My rod came out of a 73, and it was straight. Do ya got a 76 or later setup in your rig ?

The current rod which I believe is stock for a '73 is straight. The rod I made from all thread was thicker and rubbed on the sheet metal where the rod passed thru the floor. The thread on the rod I think is 3/8-32 and the all thread rod was in need of a bend. The stock rod is fine.
