My 225 v6 is bone stock but I am getting ready to go to power steering and have been told that the steering pump would go right where the smog pump is. It is smog exempt here in CA. so I do not really need the smog stuff anyway. Where can I get a list of smog related parts and identify what I can go ahead and remove? Should I remove them anyway regardless of the power steering? Would it run smoother? I just do not know enough about it to know exactly what can/should be removed.
Any thoughts on where I should begin? I then need to find the correct pump, box and bracket to do the upgrade. Off of a 70's buick v6 engine I would guess...
I checked with Herm and he does the Ford related swaps and I already have a Saginaw manual set up from the early 70's.

    Thank you,

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

I've got a '68 with the 225. It's still got all it's smog equipment which I rebuilt to the tune of $500.00+ just before they passed the exemption(damn!). It's also got the power steering set-up with a Saginaw box. I believe the PS pump is a GM item buit not sure as it was on the rig when I bought it. Since I live near you your welcome to come by a take a look at it.

As far as I know the only smog part is the air pump/injector. If you remove it you have to plug the holes in the heads where the lines go. I got some allen type plugs at Napa, have alson seen them in the Jegs catalog

PCV is considered an emissions device - but you want to keep it regardless. CA also required a retrofit vacuum advance cutoff (goes in the radiator hose) for cars that age. If you have the retrofit device, you can remove it. May have also had TAC (thermostatic air cleaner); that too is considered emissions related.

It would help to post pictures of the engine compartment and engine top with the air cleaner off.

It looks like there are 3 exits hoses behind the smog pump. One goes to the oil bath air cleaner. One goes to one side and splits into a metal line that enters the block above the exhaust manifold in 3 spots. The other one goes to the far side and does the same thing as well as split and run to another valve behind the carb and also into the top of the valve cover.
Would all of these then be removed and each hole plugged? Is there a reason why I should not do this? Seems like it would be required to fit the power steering pump anyway????
It runs fine now with it all connected but it makes sense to me to remove what is not needed and make way for the power pump that I hope to add in the near future.

Am I going about this in the right way?

Rick, Thank you for the offer and I may do that. A local freind of mine and Auburn jeep club guy has a flattie with the buick v6 and his dad has a 68 with the same setup I am looking into doing that you already have. They are local and I will try to get to see theirs first and better understand what i should do.
Seems like it all needs to come out and make room for the power pump anyway. Does your set up use the 3rd belt location and keep the smog pump? Where does the power steering pump go if the smog pump is still there?
