I have heard that you can decipher quite a bit of information regarding build date/options/paint code/etc from these items. Anybody want to give it a try ?

on the build plate the numbers are :

    J174236
    16 528 422
    J5F83AA016490 8300

    Thanks !!

also, looks like the VIN sticker has another one underneath. Any idea what that sticker might have been ?

by the way this is a 75 CJ5......

My book to decipher is out at the shop at this moment, I can get it later. Some of the Jeep websites have this info also. As for the dash sticker: what appears to be another sticker behind it is actuall a portion of the sticker that stays behind if anyone tries to remove it. It is to prevent it from being removed and used on another vehicle. If removed it will leave behind a portion stating "void" behind it to indicate that it has been tampered with.

Don't know what would be under the VIN sticker other than paint... The sticker is self explanatory; GVWR is gross vehicle weight rating (maximum), GAWR is for the axles. A 3750 GVWR came with the standard 5-leaf springs.

    VIN:
    J - Jeep Corporation
    5- 1975
    F - 3-speed manual
    83 - CJ-5
    A - 3750 GVWR
    A - 258 cid I6, 1V
    016490 - sequential serial number

On the VIN plate, "J174236" is the sales order number. If there were a special sales request and order number (SSR&O), that would be to the right of the sales order #. 16 is factory only, 528 is the paint code ("Mellow Yellow"), 422 is the trim code, follwoed by the VIN and Jeep model number 8300.

<edit> Can't find the trim code - I only know the CJ trim codes for buff or black buckets or 1/3-2/3 bench (405,406,407,408).

You might try a website called vehiclehistory. They have a vin decoder for several makes of autos including Jeeps.

Ive got a related question... I have a 1965 CJ5 with a special sales order number (D-3669) That number is in a plate that has the kaiser logo "jeep corporation toledo ohio" and everything on it. Right above that in another plate, these numbers stand alone ( 81 201) Can anyone shed light on this? My vin Is 8305191742 Thanks!

    OLD thread revived!

The '72 VIN starts with J2...

The 8305... VINs end in 1971.

There's a VIN document at the top of the "Early CJ-5" forum. You're in teh wrong forum if you want info on a '69.
