I have a 1974 Jeep CJ-5. When you shift the transfer case into 4 high the transfer case locks in. When I try to shift the transfer case into 4 low it doesn't lock in. What could be the problem. I really need some help. Michael Avant

is this unusual behavior or are you new to the jeep? Typically they can be a pain to get in in most older 4wds of any make. Sometimes you have to fiddle with it while rolling in neutral or somthing like that. Or it could be a worn out lincage or somthing internal or both

Not clear on your description of the transfer case locking in, or not locking in???

Do you mean than when you shift into 4 Hi, the transfer case fully engages and functions... but it will not fully engage in 4 Low? Does it engage at all in 4 low? Hear any grinding?
Or does it engage then pop out? Give us a better description of what happens when you shift into 4 Low.
Do you have any lift on this Jeep, suspension or body lift?
What is the condition of the engine mounts and transmission mounts? Worn mounts can cause engagement issues...

Give us a bit more info to work with Michael...

The d20 can be a bear to shift if its not quite lined up inside.
Try unlocking the hubs, then shift the t-case into low, then re-lock the hubs. Works every time on my cj.

You can shift from 2HI to 4HI at any speed.

If you are having trouble shifting into 4LO, it's ok to be moving at a baby crawl forward. Clutch in, baby crawl, shift - you may get a clunk, but that's ok. If you get a rrrRRR or loud gear clash, you are doing something wrong. Hubs should be locked in to shift into 4HI or 4LO.

If you try it with the hubs unlocked, shift ONLY at a dead stop.

The shifter has to be all the way back with the knob next to the top of the tool box for 4LO. The knob will touch the top of the tool box when you shift. If you can move the shifter that much, and it still won't engage 4LO, then you likely have worn or broken shifter linkage, or something wrong internally with the transfer case.

I'll have an extra t-14/D20 combo in about a month. Interested?

When I put my 73 D20 into 4hi it feels tight, like it really "engaged" and found its home. When I put it in 4lo it almost feels like I missed the gear, or pushed too far past it. But its actually engaged just fine.

In fact, where it feels slightly engaged in 4lo its actually in the mythical 2lo, I push(pull) the stick past that point and almost on the floor its fully engaged into 4lo, but you wouldn't know it by the feel of the TC shifter.

With the motor turned off and your transmission engaged into first gear, jack your front end off the ground so the wheels don't touch. Then put it in 4hi with the hubs DIS-engaged. You should be able to spin the wheels. Now engage both hubs and try and spin the tires, they shouldn't move as they are locked into the driveline. Now do the same with 4 lo. Experiment and figure out where exactly your TC engages.

Pull the cover plate off (with the rubber cover) check out anything that is sloppy or lose as you work the shifter back & forth ,,Sounds like a bushing is worn out .. Theres alot of moving parts that wear out on them .I had my Dana rebuilt & it still did it. Bought some new parts from Catoctin Jeep & ATV (new shifting levers & the heim joints (the little balls in a socket that wear out).
