First we need to know which sending unit/ gauge you're referring to.

when i wrote this question the wife was telling me about a situation at work. i was distracted to say the least. when i bought the jeep nothing in the speedometer cluster worked. when i redid the dash, i put a speedometer from an 1946 cj because i liked the looks of it. now i don't have a fuel gauge.i want to know if the SW fuel gauge from the older cj's will work with lock ring sending unit thats in my tank now. bob

Your jeep is a 12V system (right) and your flattie gauge set up is 6V (right) so beware of smoke..
