I appear to have two different types of hubs in my garage inventory ... one works well, and the other one, not so much. Can someone give me some help?

    Hub Type 1 - works good ...

Hub Type 2 - not so good - back side has no step, and bore is smaller and my bearing race and 8430S seal won't fit!

the larger OD bearings are LM501349 if I recall.
but yes, two different hubs, with size of bearing and seal being the difference
early (CJ2A thru early CJ5s) smaller bearing and seal
and late version with larger bearings and seal
there are serial number breaks in the numbers for production
but after so many years have passed, parts get swapped around
I prefer the larger bearings (and seals) and that all 4 corners of the Jeep be the same.

Smaller diameter wheel bearings fit the model 23-2 full floating rear axle and all model 25 front axles plus the rare 1961 Jeep model 27 front axle. (1941-1961)

Larger diameter wheel bearings fit the 1962 and later model 27 A and later 27 AF front axles. (1962-1971)

Looks like I'll be pressing out some studs and prepping some other hubs for use on my disc brake conversion ... wish I'd noticed that before. Measure twice cut once ... how many times do I have to learn that lesson ...

I wanted to buy a press anyway.

    Jim,
Just following your lead. So "thanks" back to you.

I tend to think about these small *progressions from time to time.
I kinda think that the early type bearings / seals are more common place.

In this context the word *progressions is debatable.

What do you like about the later hubs Troy ?

I like the fact that I already own all of the parts I need for the later hubs, and I own 5 of them, assuming the two on my D27 are later style. I just by chance sent mcruff these two early style ones to be machined. I hope that when I take my D27 apart that those two hubs will not need machining or it's another USPS round trip to Mike for machining. Since I'm doing 4 wheel disc conversion, I'd like them all to be the same.

I guess I thought that all D25 and D27 hubs were the same, but that's what I get for thinking. :)

Oh, well - I've learned a lot so far and had a lot of fun ... just a minor issue along the way ... no worries!

One of the things I am beginning to figure out is that I think I like working and learning, as much as I like finishing my project. In the last several years I have bought an upgraded several rock crawlers. In the last year I have been through about 6 rigs. Three of those were in my garage for months before I got them out on the trail. After one or two runs, they were gone and I was on to my next project. My wife has always said she thinks she is next, but so far I haven't got tired of her yet.

None of the 27 hubs that I've seen were machined on the back... Just the 25's.

The dana 27 of his were machined but rusted and rough, the 25 hubs had never been machined and had very deep counterbores on them compared to the dana 27's. Those were at least easier to machine than the spindles. The spindles are some very tough crap, the hubs are cast iron.
