The brake and turn signals are a separate circuit from the tail lights. Are you sure the bulb is OK? Does the front right turn signal work?

if you have a test light start checking for power check the pins in the socket first then on up the line at any connection

I "think" the front and rear circuit is seperate.
If they were hooked together your front blinker would come on when you hit the brakes.

    Spartan stock switch?

mm. I'd still say the front and rear are seperate. Check at the switch for outputs.

Front and rear are separate. Rears run thru the T/S switch to differentiate between brake and turn when the turn signal is on.
So, is there power to the contact for the large bright (brake and turn) filament in the socket when the brakes or turn signal are on?

Also check for a bad wire or connection between the switch and the taillight.

Bill, didn't you just do some other work on it. Wouldn't be the first time a wrench slipped and pinched a wire. Check by bypassing old wire with a good wire. You may use same good wire to run from battery to check light itself.

Check and see if the two wires to the light
are crossed. [ does the 'brightest filiment come on
when the light switch is on ?] If so, reverse the two
    light wires at the light.

Make sure you have continuity between wire from the signal switch and bulb socket, if you do and a new bulb doesn't work the signal switch is bad.

Check your wiring diagram for your turn sig switch. With test light, check the wire coming out of the T-sig switch for power. You will have two for the right side, one for the front will not show stop and the one for the rear will.

There are butt connection splices in the harness. In the '66 there are butt splices for the rear lights near in the harness running under the dimmer switch. There are also butt splices near the lights.
The connectors get gunked with dirt.
You can clean the connections by pulling them apart.
Cleaning and reinstalling got my rear lights working again.
If you have a voltmeter you will be able to see a little voltage getting to the connectors but the dirty connectors cut it from the needed 12v to a much lower voltage.

This is the very reason a volt meter will get you in trouble when working on your lights. A volt meter needs no current from the circuit to read voltage. The test light uses current and will show trouble on the circuit.

See if ur wires are crossed because the wire with the flasher is the power to ur turn signals and if ur parking lights are crossed when u hit ue turn signal the frount hazzards will flash .
