turning the distributor advances or retards timing. It matters where its pointed.

you need to turn the engine over manually and get piston #1 at tdc then drop in the distributor with it pointing to #1. Then put the cap on it and start placing wires.

I can't tell from your picture if your off or not.

When you find out "where does #1 do" its time to ask "who does #2 work for!" again Austin Powers voice!

The question was, where is #1on the odd fire V6. On an even fire engine you can use any one of the posts on the cap for #1.

Is this for the HEI set-up only that he number one has to be on the correct terminal on the cap or is the stock cap the same way or different?

With the points it doesn't matter. Look at the underside of the cap and the cam that opens the points and you'll see why.

Could you take some more pictures of it in the correct place for future reference?

Here are the ones I sent him in PM - it IS the same one in the pick with the cap over. Number 1 is next to the BAT Terminal on the HEI...

Any hot peice of metal can ignite a air fuel vapor, throw in a spark at the top of the compression stroke and your going to get your moneys worth! Glad you got it fixed! Your gas mileage should go up too! If you have a carb might want to tune that now that your getting proper spark

Would that location for the Number 1 wire be the same for a 231 odd-fire HEI? My #1 is two positions counter-clockwise from Warloch's picture (nearest to the vacuum advance).

Yes. The HEI for the 225 IS a 231 distributor.

Huh. It's always run like a champ, but the gas mileage has never been very good. I'll switch it around to match Warloch's pictures. Thank you.

After all this fun talking about the hei I had to go out an look at the jeep. I have mine set up just like Warlocks. EFI will help your gas mileage;)
