Kinda looks like the air injection valve for the emission system. Most have been removed and plugged of by now. Does it still have an air pump and belt on the motor.

no i dont see a pump anywhere y would it run like crap when i took it off and plugged it ?
if it is plugged off in the first place. in the last pic the T that it is on, the left hose goes to the pcv and the right goes to the vaccum wipers.

Not to pick but when you take a picture next time, lay a pencil or something like that to show the part you are talking about. This will help everyone

Burp valve, aka anti-backfire valve, aka diverter valve. Cuts off the air injection on decelleration to prevent backfire.

It's not functional unless you have a smog pump connected by a belt to the front of the engine. The big hoses go to the smog pump and the air injection manifolds on the exhaust manifolds. If you remove it and plug any small hoses connected to it, it should not affect how the engine runs.

I'm sure the factory manual describes the system and its associated parts. Another good reason to own the proper factory manual.

Did you plug off just the valve or where it connects to the carb too? That valve connects right to manifold vacuum so if it's not capped properly you'll have a big ole vacuum leak and it'll run crappy.

...or, maybe it is already leaking some vacuum and the carb is tuned accordingly and when he disconnects/plugs it off he's richening the mixture? Just a thought

when i took it off i plugged every thing, the manifold hose and the hose off the carb that it hooks to. mabey pbbelly is right that the carb is set for this, i guess when i rebuild the carb i will get rid of it cause, it seems to be doing something now even if it is plugged.

when i do get rid of it should i run the hose from the pcv to the back of the carb, where this is attached. then run my wipers off the manifold vac? my wipers do not work very good as it is will this better it?
