Is this the correct one for a 1970 CJ5?
What is up with the yellow lens?
Is a red one available some where?

I have not measured it out but it seems like it is going to space my spare way out from the fender.

I have seen here dampeners used in association with it. Did they have one in 1970?

This is harder than I thought it was going to be figuring out where it goes.

Do the mounting holes match up to the ones above and behind the right rear tire?
And the dampners (at least on my '60) were treated wooden strips.

Wouldn't know about how far out or anything. A PO ripped the one (looks like the one in your picture) off the side on a rock or tree. Big hole there now. Then they welded that mount onto the tailgate, making it unusable.

I have no holes. This piece of rusting iron is a quilt of patches.

The mount was in a box given to me by the PO.

That looks just like the one on my 70-the yellow light appears to be an add on. Mine had just a red reflector there.

I am playing with the idea of making a mount that would slide into the class III receiver that is welded to the rear cross member. L shaped with the long part length long enough to put the spare at the height I want, then using hefty square shaped u-bolts to fasten that mount to the upright.

Then if you need to use the tail gate, just slip the mount out of the receiver and open the gate.

To the OP - that's the original mount. The light is not original.

At some point, the DOT required running lights on all four corners. Maybe in 1970 ... or not. Check the thread in the Restoration forum about the "elusive side market light" for what the original side marker light looked like.

This is how the carrier was mounted: [IMG]

You can see the snubber in the bow pocket.

If you remount it, find the center of the horizontal wooden support and then the metal vertical support and mark them. Line up all four bolt holes on your carrier with the marks and mark the holes. That was the easiest way I found to put those on.

I think he means the wood core in the hat channel support that curves around the inside of that fender. That's what I took it to be.

Yes, that is what I am talking about.

It makes sense if you think about it. Why else would there be those two supports there? The carrier can only go in one spot and that is it, where the quarter panel is the strongest.

    Thanks guys.

I quick test fit of the tire reveals the plastic fender extension has to go. I am scared of the world of hurt that is going to be behind it.

The block of wood goes in the cut out just above and to the right, right?

Also, I guess 1970 requires a light. It has the threaded holes for one of the elusive marker lights.

1970 didn't use the wood block-there should be a threaded metal bumper with a big round head on it that screws into a threaded hole in the body. You can kinda see it in the pic that timgr posted above.
