Anyone ever try one of these boxes on a 68 cj? Mine already has front steering box, rube goldberg, and welded tie rods. Chev (Ithink) steering column.
I like the dropped pitman arm on box. Also need help trying to figure what transmission I have. Should be T-14 (68 v-6) but po's have really worked it over! Top cover says T90C then 14 something. Thanks. I know need pictures just don't have that figured yet!

I used one on mine from an early 70s Wagoneer/Cherokee.

I have one, happens to be in a '68 as well. I replaced a worn out steering box with this one. Seems to be fine. What would you like to know?

The steering box in my '00 Grand has 4 bolts that bolt flat to the sub frame. Seems like an easy mount up, what about shaft spline count, pitman arm, etc? I still need to rid my '71 of the Ross box, so any ideas now would help. Thanks, David

You know I am not sure what year it was from. Not knowing the newer jeeps I had to look online at replacement parts to see what year it might be. So it looks like there was a design change in 1999. I have the earlier design which is the standard saginaw box. It is a three bolt mount and seems to be about 3.5 turns lock to lock.

Changing these to saginaw power steering is very common and there is quite a bit of info on the web.

In the fabricators forum on this site is a "sticky" thread on saginaw steering conversions if you need ideas on cleaning up what you have. I think advanced adapters sells a kit and someone on here? or plans for an adapter plate? sorry I'm not sure....Spline counts, u-joints, rag joints, steering shafts and hose connection styles all need to be researched.

Mine was converted when I bought it. I am happy enough with it to drive it but it could have been done better. The saginaw box that was on the jeep when I bought it I think I finally determined was from one of the smaller GM cars from the 80's and it was just worn out. This replacement from the grand cherokee was pretty much a bolt in, including the o-ring style hose connections and shft connections.

I don't know about the GC gear specifically, but generally - Saginaw gears have either 3 or 4 bolts holding them to the frame. All the manual gears have 3 bolts. The later power gears are all variable ratio, AFAIK. Earlier gears have a slower, constant ratio, and have a lighter feel. The later gears are reputed to be more durable.

I know that the Wagoneer guys like the S10 or Blazer 4x4 gear as a replacement for the original gear on Wagoneers. This is a 3-bolt gear with a comparatively slow, but variable, ratio. They tend to be in good shape when you find them in the yards, because of their improved design, and because they are newer.

So if you can find one that's the newer variable design, has a 4-bolt bracket, and came from a 4x4 - which I presume would have a leisurely ratio - then you might have a winner.
