Heater control

    Hi guy's, in my way of trying to complete my jeep i would to put control on my heater. Actualy the heater has only a swith to turn on the blower. I dont find the oem control console and i wonder if i can use the control from a older cj7 that seem to be available (1978-1986). I'm planning to put it on the aluminuium chicker plate under the dash where my radio is now (two on each side of the radio). Is that possible for me to do it? (i dont want to buy the stuff that finally wont fit into my jeep)

    P.S. Jeep cj5 1975 with oem heater.

    I found the 72-75 cables and mounted them in the area below the dash in aluminum like you have the checker plate. Works fine.

    Midwest jeep has those cables.

    I used manual choke cables from Jeg's. I think they're $6 each. Cut to the length you need. They work perfectly.

    Does any one know if using knob and wire from a cj7 (1978-1986) will work whit the 1975 heater?

    Also i want to buy the dash light and incorporate it into the chekers plate.

    This is my setup similar to what you're talking about doing. As Pathkiller mentioned, manual choke cables will work fine. Any push pull cables will work and lengths are not too critical as long as they aren't too short to cause kinking or excess friction to not be able to use them. You want them long to have sweeping curves. I used the factory cable lengths for the intermediates but I'm certain my cable knobs aren't in the factory location.

    The 1976 and new cables are a lot shorter than the stock 75 ones. I used the jegs cables but cut the knobs off and glued on the knobs from the 76+ set to get as close to stock looking as possible.

    Ain't a bad idea to just use the knob from the jeep and use custom lenght cable!

    I think I've still got some different length cables that might work for you. I'll dig them out and get some pictures of what I have and PM you later.

    Forget the 76+ cables. They are so different as to be almost unusable unless you punch out rectangles for them wherever they happen to stretch to.
    The generic choke cables can be cut to length and mount through a round hole.

    I highly recommend the Jegs cables. They are covered in plastic like the originals unlike many aftermark choke/throttle cables. They are also plenty long to cut to fit. The two on the right in my picture are the Jegs cables, the one on the left is an original cable.

    When I bought my CJ5, there were no controls at all. I used the choke cables and made a panel to hide a hideous hole the PO had cut in the dash for a stereo.

    That is an OEM mount and radio. I had one in my 75 but it is an AM model and you couldn't hear it unless you were stopped. It was always a pain when I had to pull my dash. I removed mine and gave it to a guy in Hurricane Utah.

    Any idea where to get the OEM mount. I have the radio and want the OEM look. I have a newer radio mounted in an ammo box between the seats.

    I like that setup. The plastic housing on mine is hosed, and was playing with the idea of mounting the controls in the dash.

    Since the bracket was long gone and I knew it was one of those items more difficult to find than the arc of the covenant, it was a good solution for me.

    Every once in a while you will see an original radio mount on EBay for a pre 76 model. They usually want a lot of money for them however as most have been tossed many years ago. There is also the issue that someone mentioned that the radios were AM only and hard to hear on the highway. The final issue is the radio inside is shorter than normal so you can't just fit in another unit. I did mine that way as I am going for original as possible. If you are looking for tunes an aftermarket in a center counsel is the way to go. Doug
