Well, I took the plunge. This morning I pulled my dash off and cut all the old tape from my makeshift wiring harness...Gonna re-wire the beast...and it sure does need it...I'll probably have a few questions as I go along, so TIA for your help

Are you building your own harness, or using a pre-fabbed one?

FYI if ya do any wiring underhood use a high temp wire like TXL. But you probably already knew that. Good Luck.

Yep...In fact, hi-temp wire is not bad for under the dash either....I think it will help keep the insulation from getting brittle over time

    Tom-
If you would, take plenty of pics. I'd like to see if it's worth wiring myself or buying the kit.

hardest part is removing or tracing the old wiring, getting rid of bad splices, wrong gauge wire, etc. lighting is giving me the hardest time. after that, ignition seemed like a dream. but then i haven't fired it up yet. :D pics of progress or tips you discover are always welcome.

good luck and enjoy it... i am so far.

After looking it over really good, the only bad part of the wiring seems to be behind the dash....I'm going to take a little different approach....I cut all the tape off my old harness and now it looks like a bird nest after a hurricane....My plan is to get a fuse panel from a doner car and start from scratch...I would like to put a bulkhead plug to seperate the under hood wires from the under dash wires...I'm not going to wrap them with tape this time, but use wire ties and nylon clips to hold everything together and dress it up...should make future tracing of circuits and adding circuits easier...Since I'm going new from the fuse panel to the components, I want to color code the wires and have to use the proper gauge...My thoughts are to cut the wiring from a newer vehicle at the junk yard...That should give me a large selection of sizes and colors to work with for just a couple of bucks...I'm planning on mounting the fuse panel to the back of the dash with velcro, so it can be out of sight and easily brought down to check out any problems and check fuses....I'll try to take pictures as I can and keep you updated...Too $%&# cold do touch it now...

Sounds like a good plan Tom. Using the fuse panel will be a big improvement.

I have my Painless Wiring instructions here at work. PM me your home mailing address, I'll copy it and mail it to you, if you think it will help.

Let me know... Good Luck! :)

I have nearly just completed a 2 year restoration project with my son (to teach him the basics of a car) and redid the wiring. I can tell you it was a mess since the previous owner had done a lot of modifications of this 67 Dauntless CJ5. I ended up getting the Centech wiring harness which I don't reccomend as I had to modify it a great deal and spent hours trying to figure it out, even with their instructions and original factory manuals. After all that, I see now that they have the original wiring harness available and I would use that. The only advantage to the Centech or Painless is that you get a fuse box. IMO,unless you can't afford it or just want to tinker for fun I can't honestly reccommend wiring things yourself and would look into the original wiring harness.
