I just bought a '73 CJ5 with an I6 258 engine. It has the T-14 3-spd trans. The reverse and first gear come out of gear every so often, not a huge problem for me, just would like to know how to fix. Thanks!

Could be wearing of the shift fork, sychronizer, synchronizer hub, shift dogs on the gears, or a combination of these. I just rebuilt my T15, and it was my first time. Not a hard job, its just time consuming.

In addition to what has been said, Worn bearings could cause that. Also check the nut that holds the transfer case input gear on. If loose it can allow the transmission mainshaft to walk back and forth causing this issue.
