    Hi
Picking up a 1960 Cj-5 this weekend. I will introduce myself when I pick it up and it is home in more detail on the appropriate page!! However, it needs a breather assembly and I wanted to get a headstart by asking and getting opinions on what I should buy. I will post pics and will quote the owner with this statement, "It has a new Solex one barrel carb. I have a two barrel Weber that can be used with a little modification."

Should I get a Solex air cleaner assy or modify for the two barrel and exactly what will I need to do. It has the F4-134 engine with stock Tranny with overdrive.

    Thanks

    Kevin

It's up to you. If originality doesn't matter too much to you, then go with a aftermarket paper filter. They're definately easier to service. On the other hand, an oil bath filter resists water splash and is cool to look at. They can be hard to find intact and complete however. Post an ad in the wanted section here and someone may be able to help. I wouldn't go with a two barrel. Probably way too much carb and if the solex is adjusted properly it will do what you need it to do. Good luck and welcome aboard.

From the looks of under your hood, I vote to keep it original and stay with the oil bath air filter. The water splash issue is a real issue. Just had a short block ($4500)put in our 2003 Dodge pickup due to some damage of ingesting some water while crossing some water in a creek on our farm. I don't think it would have happened in my jeep.

I also like the solex carbs. They are great. Easy to maintain.

I think the solex wil do you fine. Looks like someone has already got started on the jeep right good . If you cant find a breather accembely I can get one off a cj3b if it will work but its going to take me a little doing , its still on the jeep 30miles north of me lol.

There is a late and early version for the 4 cyl F head engine. The early version had no splash shield but the late did. Yours should have the shield.

Thanks for the info and help. I think I will go with the aftermarket for now because it is cheaper and quicker. Would prefer getting the original but from the looks of things may take some time and research on my part. Where is the best place to by the housing and filter and does K&N make air filters for it?

Kevin, I see the oil bath air cleaners on ebay quite often. Does anyone know if ones from M38s or A1s will fit? If so they might be easier to find as the Military kept plentiful supplies of parts.
Hope to see some more pics of your jeep. It looks neat.

Does anyone have a picture of what one looks like mounted on a 60ish or equivalent installation? The whole assembly. I cannot picture what it would look like complete as a whole. I have been getting a couple e-mails and pics.

    Thanks to everyone

Can you send me those pics. Thanks

Also, Northstar willys link has the oil filter. Is it only a hose that hooks up to it and then to the carb??
