My 225 is spewing coolant from the overflow tube. New thermostat, rebuit engine. Started off slow then I noticed a big puddle underneath. Any thoughts on this? Do I need an overflow bottle?

Are there air bubbles constantly coming up in the coolant? sometimes with a new engine, getting all the air pockets out of it is difficult. I would fill it enough to keep it from overheating, and then let it run and get good and hot. then top it off and see what happens then. This isn't uncommon with new engines, or even engines that are being filled for the first time. The air bubbles heat up and then expand and push the fluid out. Does it do it with the pressure cap on or off? Is the cap bad and letting slight pressure overide the seal? just food for thought.

I park on a hill faceing up when doing a total antifreeze replacement. Getting them air pockets out can be a bitch on level ground. just my nickels worth.

What about the old trick of drilling a tiny hole in the flat part of the thermostat? To let the air "pass" when thermostat is closed?

Its normal. I just had my radiator fixed and had the guy solder the overflow tube back on. I stuck a piece of rubber fuel line to it so it drips down out of the way. Let it heat up, whatever comes out comes out, then it will cool down. I just don't fill my radiator up all the way. When you get up to operating temp, the fluid will expand again and fill the radiator all the way. Eventually you will get the "right" amount of fluid so it doesn't leak.

Or you could rig up an overflow bottle. ;)

I've always filled the rad and run the engine up to temp with the cap off to let the air bubble out, and eventually things will settle down. Just try to keep the 50/50 antifreeze/water mix level up over the top of the fins in the rad. The top tank should be nearly full when hot and running.
