jeep master cylinder

    I think I'd be a bit leery of buying NOS brake parts that have been sitting around, especially a master cylinder. No telling what the internal condition of the seals, etc is and how it was stored. That's just my opinion though. Next question is what the original application was; was it the Marlin or the Jeep? One of the MC's appears to be from a disc brake application, since the reservoirs are not equal in size. The new one has both reservoirs the same.

    I think I'd pass, even at $9.99. Brakes are not an area to skimp on.

    Steve I didn't see anyting listed as NOS. :? The M.C. pictured is identical to the one on my '71, and the single-bolt M.C. is on my '70 FJ5. Both types should bolt to the left frame rail underneath the pedals. :beer:

    I wouldn't be gambling on a master cylinder of unknown pedigree.

    However, if you really want to check it, go to NAPA or call them and have them give you the part number for a jeep master cylinder since the NAPA part number is posted in the auction.

    You could give them the part number and perhaps find out how old it might be - e.g. whether it is a current part number.

    I have several master cylinders in the shop from old 71 and earlier CJ jeeps, and they all have the flat cover meant for access through the floor, not the snap type cover as shown in the ad.

    When it comes to brake stuff I like new, and as fresh as possible.

    You are correct Alan, I was simply guessing that the MC had been sitting on the shelf for a long time based upon the descriptinof the rust on the outside. I'm guessing that if there is rust on the outside, there is likely to be rust on the inside too.

    I replaced my dual MC on my 71 with a 72-75 MC(non disk). Needed to swap the boot and rod and reduce the brake lines. Total cost under 30 dollars and works great.

    I maybe wrong but he said his MC has a bolt on lid. That sounds like a single resevoir master to me right?

    The bolt-on cover on my replacement was just like the factory. As was the dual reservoir. I just got rid of a spare '71 MC and don't feel bad about it as there are kits available to rebuild it if desired by the receiving party. I think I rebuilt one a few years ago for a friend in CA for less than half of the cost to buy a reman unit. Still in use as far as I know...

    Mine cost me a whole 8.47 to rebuild lol Im planing on replacing it with a dual unit a little later in my project so I figure the rebuild would be the best route. Sorry for the semi hijack
