For the second time I have received a brake hose which is the wrong size for my '69 DJ5A. But it is supposedly the "proper" hose for my vehicle. The frustrating thing is that I recently installed three new brake cylinders with the "proper" parts, so one would expect that the "proper" hoses would fit into the "proper" cylinder. The old hoses were 3/8" where the line goes into the brake cylinder and both the Wagner and Dorman hoses that I have ordered have 7/16" connections. I'm pretty frustrated with this as all of my searches have turned up nothing. I can't be the only one? I think that these parts were the same on the CJ5's in that period so maybe someone out there has been through this? See the link below for hose end comparison.

When ever I deal with "brakes" it ends up being a couple days...

its the wrong length, wrong size, its metric etc.. I kept running into the wrong length issue and got custom ones made. $24 I think it was cheaper than what flaps wanted.
Also, tell the flaps people to try different years. Flaps people hide when they see me lol.

something to consider. I wish I could give you a part number.

shops that deal with power steering, hydrolic and brake hoses.. I don't know what the exact name is.

performance hose and fitting shops are what I came up with. I imagine, Agriculture (tractor) repair shops would have the tools.

Some offroad shops would too, however this would probably be more expensive..

normally I will ask the oldest guy at the Flaps. "I can't get the part here so do you know where I can get it done" They will give me a few shops and sometimes even the numbers I call up and then go over there.

See if flaps can cross the OEM Jeep p/n 943197, 11-1/2" long according to the book.

Don't know where you're at but here (Portland, OR) Oil Filter Service makes them.

Thanks guys. I used the OEM part number but it still points to a hose with a 7/16 male end. I'm north of Dallas, TX. I have not found a custom brake hose maker yet, but I have a couple of possibilities (nobody open today). It's still really frustrating because it seems to me that somebody made a mistake on a cross reference somewhere and all manufacturers are selling you hoses with a HF07 (7/16") fitting but then also selling you wheel cylinders which require the HF33 (3/8") connector.

Here is a (front) Wheel Cylinder (shows inlet 3/8"):
http://www.bendixcatalog.com/PartDetail.aspx?PartNumber=33221&PartType=Wheel Cylinder

Here is a (front) brake hose (under Specifications it shows 7/16" male end):
http://www.dormanproducts.com/p-23376-h38999.aspx?year=1969&make=Jeep&model=DJ5&parttype=Brake Hose

I hope that I'm just being stupid somehow...because this is really frustrating. It would be better if I was sure that I had to go custom...but I keep thinking that there must be a hose out there.

The front rubber lines on the cj are female thread at the end closest to the wheel. That end is held into a bracket on the the knuckle with a clip. It is then connected to the wheel cylinder with a short, S-shaped steel line. Your DJ line is completely different. I would keep looking for the right hose with the 3/8 thread. Maybe the guy at the parts store can do some searching for you and see if that line exists and, it's application. Perhaps a earlier model DJ would have had smaller brakes and call for the the other hose (the one you need).

I am curious about about the hose ID. I would think that the 7/16 threaded hose would have a correspondingly larger ID than the smaller 3/8 line.

Searched 1963 DJ hose. Got this.

I guess it makes sense that the DJ front brake lines are different from the CJ (2WD vs 4WD). I went to a "real" auto part store (not a chain) and they were able to help somewhat, without having to custom make a new hose. He had an adapter that was the correct size. BUT, when installed it rides against the steering hardware (see link below) and I'm not sure yet (have not finished the install) if it's tight enough (it seems to be). Since all the hardware moves with it, if it's tight enough, I guess it would be OK?

Since you are in Dallas I would go see John in Duncanville. You can call him at
4699513500

He is a retired USPS mechanic that sells lots of DJ parts. He can probably sell you a part or let you know the part number you need.

Also www.postaljeep.net is an option.
