I found my issue with not being able to stay in first gear. I took the shifter out and found some broken teeth on the sliding gear. It is obviously going to need a rebuild. My question can I do more damage to the tranny if I just use 2nd and 3rd gear. I removed all pieces that were gathering at the base of my transmission pan.

Maybe by having to slip the clutch more, but probably not to the tranny if you removed all the pieces. Any idea what caused it to break in the first place? If that hasn't been fixed, or completely self destructed you might also do more damage.

No idea what caused it. The only thing I can think of is hairline cracks in the gears and they just gave up the ghost. One week prior to this I was using first gear just fine. I think the damage is limited to that area of the tranny.

Well, seeing how its already broke and has to come apart, I would drive it gently until I could take it apart. Hopefully those broken parts didn't gouge or scrape anything else up while they were bouncing around...

We drained the tranny and did a thorough inspection of all gears. The only gears that had any knicks or damage all had to do with first gear...

the slider also matches up to the reverse idler...so that means no reverse as well as no first......
I would not drive it till it's repaired/replaced
    trans lock-up at 55mph is....well...dangerous..........
    that's my opinion

I agree with Jim. I just cringed when I thought about the lock-up / disintigration. Nows the time to rebuild it.

Am rebuilding soon... Noticed the smell of a burning clutch on the way home yesterday... Any idea on a cost for this evolution... I am going to remove it and take it to someone who knows trannies... I gues i am looking at a complete rebuild since it is out...
