Just picked up a SM465 and NP205 off of CL for $175, any major issues I should watch out for when I tear it apart? Going to order the Novak adapter to my D18...

And as an aside, anybody got use for an NP205?

Take a very close look at the dog teeth on third gear and the engagement teeth in the sleeve where it engages third gear on the 3-4 synchronizer assembly. These are known for jumping out of third gear. There is an updated gear and synchronizer sleeve to fix this. Plan on replacing the mainshaft bushings if you disassemble the trans to install a new mainshaft. If using a spud shaft check the mainshaft splines carefully between the trans and transfer case as they typically wear out also.

Thanks nick. In addition, being as I'm replacing a T14, I need the 10 spline kit from Novak, correct?

You would need the 10 spline shaft if you are not replacing the Dana 18 transfer case input gear. Otherwise you can change the mainshaft to the 6 spline and get a new matching input gear. I just went through this myself. Rebuilt the SM465 and the Dana 20 that I have. Like Nick said, I would update the 3rd gear and 3-4 synchro with the kit from Novak. Also update the spacer between 3rd gear and the main drive gear on the counter shaft. that keeps 3rd gear from walking. Their instructions are great.

I rebuilt my SM465 with Novak parts when I installed my main shaft. Better to do it now, while it out. You will really hate to pull that 175lbs transmission later when it fails.

Yep, just order the rebuild and adapter kit from Novak and be done with it. I rebuilt and adapted mine last winter. Do it yourself and then you'll know the transmission inside and out....its a very simple transmission :)

That is right! I was a little intimidated by the thought of rebuilding the transmission as I had never done one before. I have rebuilt V8's, Flat 4's Harley V-twins and Vintage GMC inline 6's but never a transmission. I did it and now I can add that to my "resume" also. Very simple and easy to rebuild but heavier than hell to move around on the bench. The SM465 rebuild kit from Novak is great and I would recommend doing it now so you know everything is ready to go. Very easy with the instructions from Novak. You will need access to a press for the countershaft gear and the Mainshaft bushings.

I put the bushings in the oven. Then put the main shaft in the freezer. Then I was able to tap the bushing on the main shaft. Easier then the the press. Keep in mine that your wife won't like the smell of the oven afterward.

I have a garage sale toaster oven just for this purpose. It resides in the garage. Helpful for bearings and other interference fit parts as well.
