My old 1965 ecj 5 has a starting problem. I can start her up right now and drive all day but when I shut her off and try to restart she doesn't want to fire. If I can get a pull or park on a hill to get it to roll over it will fire right up. It also does not seem to like this unleaded gas we have nowadays. Do any of you jeep experts have an idea where I should start looking for answers?

The fact that it will start on a hill suggests to me that the problem may be inadequate voltage to the ignition system when it is drawn down by the starter cranking. Or the ignition demanding higher voltage than normal.

Check all electrical connections, including battery ground(s). Clean the distributor cap. Possibly plugs, points and timing need a tune up. It also seems to be heat related - perhaps a weak coil?

Good unleaded fuel should not be a problem, but it might help to clean the system with a can of Seafoam additive.

    Start with a basic tune-up.

Is it cranking over? I imagine it is

when was last time you maintained your ignition system? like change your points?

it sounds like your points, but I am not familiar with the four cylinder, that is what you got in there right?

go with what PeteL said, his post makes sense

What Pete sez. I also have to ask if you have the original prestolite starter or maybe a Toyota type? If original then take a close look at the strap from the solenoid to the starter and make sure you have nice clean connections.

I should have also said, replace the cap and rotor if there's any doubt about their condition. Cheap insurance for good starting.

Definitely check the starter connections Walt mentioned.

I understand that you starter works and that the engine turns slowly under its action, but ignition doesn't work.

I understand that you put it on a hill to push it down an start the engine by putting for ex the 2nd gear.

Is the engine very hot when you start it again?

Of course checking the electric system is good, you must have a look at your spark plugs.

And condensator, etc... do you have a good spark when you test it?

But maybe you have a problem with the carburetor, it happened to me.

I cleaned the 2 screws. The one for the accelerator pump was dirty. I cleaned it and it was OK. Wonderful.

Check your timing. May be too far advanced.

    How old is the battery?.

The thing rolls over just fine, the battery is new so I will check the points, condenser, coil, and the cap and rotor. Thank you for your help. Will let you know what I find. Martin

Sorry I have taken so long, sometimes I'm a little slow on these projects. I replaced the suggested parts and had the starter rebuilt now she runs great. Thank you for your help. Martin
