Working on the brake system this week on my 66 cj5. 10" drums on front and back. Single cylinder MC. Just bout a new master cylinder from kaiser willys along with new s lines and wheel cylinders.

    Questions:
Seems the old fitting that goes into the master cylinder and the first break line, not sure what that fitting is called but does it need thread/teflon tape? The one I removed HAD tape on it. Or will just a crush washer suffice?

Line sizes: I have read that all the break lines are 3/16" lines. However, my first break line that runs to the dist block is bigger. Looks 1/4". Do I replace with 3/16 or 1/4?

Line Lengths: I have my old break lines to measure but does anyone happen to know all the straight break line lengths?

Line Fittings. Are all the line end fittings the same aside from from the first break line to the dist block? Anyone know the size fittings?
What is the best way to clean the old fittings(dist blocks and master cylinder fitting)? Would purple power mix hurt them?
Do the early cjs require a prop valve in the rear line? (10" drums)

Just want to make sure I do everything right. I do have a double flaring tool and handful of bending/cutting tools. Really just dont know what fittings to use...

    Thanks yall!

If you refer to the banjo fitting on the head of the m/c, it requires specific copper washers. Do not use tape.

    No proportioning valve.

Clean any parts as needed with a final alcohol rinse before using them.

If you have not used a double flare tool before, be aware that chamfering the tube end (especially the inside) is critical, before shaping it.

Pete, is that copper washer a common part at a FLAPS?

    Thanks

BRAKE system you are using can be dangerous. Is this going to be street driven? Why stay with a single MC ?

Does anyone sell a duel master cylinder to replace the original single master cylinder?

    Several companies do,

R&P have an nice kit that you don't have to weld
Herm has also has a kit

i'm sure there are others like kaiserwilly and such

if you have single reservoir master cylinder just make sure you you check your brake system for stuff that needs to be maintained. Example those rubber hoses that have seen better days, wheel cylinders that are in questionable shape, adjustment etc.
This should be done regardless of single or dual master cylinder.

I just put a R&P kit on mine...fairly simple installation. Well worth the cost.

The one Kaiserwillys sells is R&P's kit. They used to sell the Herm kit but no longer.
