Well before the bugs got to me I tried to get the tailpipe hanger mounted. Tomorrows another day

So wanting to stay as factory correct as I can I did some research to see how the tailpipe hanger was configured and attached to the crossmember. These diagrams are about all I could find on it

I already had a what I believe is a NOS hanger, But I needed to make the support and L brackets shown in the diagram. I found some pc's in the shop

Here are the pc's I made, L bracket on right and the support on the left

This is what I came up with

Marked the hole location and drilled, every tool box should have one of these step bits

Everything mounted to what I believe is factory correct

With the chassis back in storage, time to dig into this body to even see if I can save it
    [IMG]

My plan is to try to save the sides and replace everything in between with new panels. First step is to remove the sides which means lots of spot welds. easiest way to find them is to sand the paint to bare metal. Any round spots of paint left over usually is a spot weld which will need to be drilled out

Spot welds for inside support. Nice amount of bondo here
    [IMG]

looks like a 70's repair to me. overlay sheet metal over rust, braze and loads of bondo

What am I getting myself into here o_O
    [IMG]

I got the drivers side off after a million spot welds
    [IMG]

Laid a square on the bondo. more than 1/2" on here and this is the good side

had to take most of it off with a chisel

I wonder if Lamont at Classic Enterprises offers "madman special" if a fellow places one order for everything between the two sides? Other than cowl and firewall I think he'd have you covered.

Can't find rear corner replacements but found this. And a sheet of 18 guage steel is only $47.00

Love the video at 24min in. Welding with no gloves and in flip flops. My style except I wear at least one glove. After he burns his hand... He grabs a glove and then picks up the hot piece with his other hand (which is bare).

Before losing total sanity working on the tub I started making the winch mount. luckily I still have 3 of the 4 pc's that were original

Not to bad cutting 1/4" angle with a sawzall, slow going tho

    Drill press a must though

Two hrs later most of the pc's cut. some grinding, drilling and welding to follow

This is what happens when your nicely restored winch sits in a puddle of water for a yr due to a leaking shed

Post lots of pix of that winch rebuild. I've got the same winch awaiting rebuild in my shed (it's 6 inches off the deck, on high ground, so no puddles). I want to see your step by step so I can do mine efficiently.

    Love those brackets.

There was a guy who stretched a 5 to a 6 who did a nice job on tub edges. I think he used long angle iron, clamps, and relief cuts to get it straight, then stitched it back together. Welding the relief cuts can suck it back out of shape so clamp while welding and be prepared to tweak after. Maybe a good welder can anticipate the contractuon from welding and build that into the clamped edge in advance. I'm not that good.

I got a sheet of 18 ga sheet metal so now I need a metal brake to bend it into panels. A friend of mine has one but thats no fun to drive there when I need something done soooooo off to lowes o_O

Decided to try to make one with some hinges since my welding stinks

Can't seem to get away from spot welds

First try it bent a pc of aluminum perfectly

2nd try on some 16 ga steel and the hinges bent on me

So I made my own hinges with 3/4" pipe sleeved over 1/2" rod

Another try with steel and it worked pretty good. Need to adjust a few things to get a tighter bend

I am noticing some flex in the top angle iron towards the middle so next lowes trip I'll take care of that
