Do I need a ballast resistor on an early f head or can I just put 12 volts to the coil. Gotta hear this thing run.

On my 55 f-head I just put a 12 volt coil on with a built in resistor in the coil.

So probably OK to start it , but should have one to run it much ... Right? Just bought a new one from Kaiser Willys, Don't think its built in. Thanks.

I've always been curious about this since the factory service manual doesn't include a ballast resistor in the wiring diagram for the F-head, but does show one for the V6.

Glenn, if I'm not mistaken (as usual), the reason the diagram doesn't show a resistor is because the running voltage to the coil comes from the fuel gauge. There is a voltage regulator built in for the gauges and the coil circuit. At least that's how my 61 works.

Hmmm. The ignition wire from the switch and the wire to the coil are on the same terminal though. It seems as the regulator is only for the temp. gauge.

Ran a 12 volt wire directly to the coil. Lasted a couple of days before it fried my points. I am now back to running the power from my dash.
