Just replaced all 4 shackles on my 69 cj5.
I realize the leaf spring/shackles need to move, but is there a torque setting for shackle bolts?
    Just snug them?
    Any info appreciated!

When I did my stock height Rancho Shackles, they said 15-20 pounds.

With a nylock or prevailing torque nut on the end, I was told to tighten them down until you can just turn the bolt with a wrench

Appreciate it guys. I've been checking google and finding 3 answers...24lbs., 100lbs., and tighten just enough til you can spin it with a wrench. 100lbs seems WAY too tight to me. That's like a head bolt!

100 pounds would be so tight that your suspension would probably not move IMO.

The spring mounting suspension bolts (all) as stated in the FSM,are torqued at 65-80 so I suspect someone just took that as anything having to do with the springs. That would be my guess.

Set my torque wrench to 70ftlbs and snapped the bolt like it was a toothpick. Going to go with 20ft lbs on the rest of them…. I like to learn the hard way….

You should be using grade 8. A spring bolt should NOT brake at 70ftlbs

I torque mine to 25 ftlbs with locking nuts. They never come loose on me and it lets the shackle and spring flex.

The answer depends on your bushings.
Stock elastomer bushing inner sleeves are designed to rotate with the shackle. They need to be tightened enough to make this happen.

Otherwise the sleeve will work it's way into the shackle sleeve or the shackle will be loose.

Sleeved poly bushings have a sleeve that rotates with the shackle and require less torque to be tight.

The bolt should be tight enough so the sleeve also rotates with the shackle.

I know it's not "professional", but, "good 'n tight" is what I usually use.

    Addendum:

Be wary of "sleeveless" poly bushings.

there are different procedures for tightening early C shackles.
