Did you adjust the points on installation?

  2. I'll assume he did...I"m still clearing the cobwebs & on my first cup of coffee...but might it be a good idea to take a jump wire from the + terminal on the battery to the + on the coil...hotwire type thing to bypass the ignition switch? I've had switches go out on me in several vehicles. If his wiring is anything like many old vehicles, it also eliminates the ratnest wiring issues. Getting spark shouldn't be too hard.

If it were mine I would do a compression check first- if OK then replace points and the uni-set you bought is a good replacement. Where does the black wire go on the uni-set? Answer=It has to be captured by the spring that holds pressure on the movable point arm. Coil primary resistance will be low ohms. You need the starter bypass wire from the "R" terminal on the starter solenoid to the coil + (or ballast resistor wire that feeds the coil) then make sure you are getting power there during cranking.

Alright! Got it running, not well, but running. Fires on the second crank, timing is on. The first set of points was good, honestly, I didn't know how to properly adjust them. A friend of mine came over (who was a diagnostic mechanic for years) showed me how to do what I was attempting to do. The points were set incorrectly, and I had no way of knowing otherwise. Now I know otherwise, and how to set the timing. I have other smaller issues now, but nothing I can't work through- such as a carb cleaning, vacuum lines, and finding an air filter assy. Then the really fun part of completely rebuilding everything. Honestly, this has been among the most rewarding days of my life. Thank you guys. I'll post a thread once I start the rebuild. And if any of you are in PA, stop in for a visit!

And masscj2a- dude, after the damage my liver has taken over the last month alone from this GP, there's no way I'd sell for anything less than an MB ;)

Odd fire or misfire engines if you prefer are a a new experience for most people. Once you get the first one running right you realize that it really isn't all that hard to get them running right, even if it is a design that started in 1961.

Congratulations. You will find the advise here for a newly acquired Jeep is to get it to Start, Then Run, make it Stop, and finally get it to Steer. Looks like the first step is done.

Go out and enjoy driving it before you worry about "rebuilding" it. I make a lot of money off of people that buy these Jeeps to "rebuild" and take them apart. Simply put they lose interest, they pop out a few kids, the wife wants the garage back, and then I come in and save them from getting scrapped by the hulk hauler that all wives have on speed dial. Almost anyone can take a Jeep apart, but it is a rare person that can actually put one back together. The best part of yours is that the rear axle is worth more then you paid for the whole Jeep.
