V6 flywheel question

    I have a recessed fly wheel for my 225 V6. I am curious if there is some reason for the recessed design? Maybe an attempt increase the weight slightly while maintaining the distance to the clutch face?

    I am tempted to remove the lip around the edge, which has a small chip in it, wen it is refaced.

    Any wisdom gratefully accepted.

    i was wondering the same thing. I bet it costs more to get it surfaces with that rim.

    I had mine recently refinished and it cost me 40$ at an NAPA machine shop...not that much as it seems

    I cut those type flywheels and I don't charge any more for it being recessed. Not much difference in setup. Don't get rid of the recess.

    My 231 had the recessed type. Didn't know the 225 also used them. All the 225 flywheels I have seen were flat, as I recall. Not sure if machining that high area off the face would affect clutch operation or not.

    I think the recess centers up the pressure plate assembly? ...could be wrong.

    Not all flywheels have that recess, but the ones that do you need to keep it that way. Sometime the pressure plate bolts center the pressure plate on flywheels without the recess.

    I assumed that I would use an alignment tool when assembling the clutch on the flywheel, so cannot figure out why it's got the perimeter ridge. SOme 225 flywheels apparently don't have the same raised edge.

    Guess I won't worry about it.

    It's been too many years since I did a clutch on a V6. I would think you would want an alginment tool regardless of the flywheel style. It does make things a bit easier.
    Some here have said there are 2 weights of flywheels. that may explain the extra metal on the outside.

    I have 2 v6 flywheels and they both have that ridge. They weigh like 45 lbs. Other than that they are unremarkable.

    What is the diameter of the recess? Just curious. I was trying to remember why I had mine machined off. Thinking the recess in the 231 flywheel was like 9.5 inches and the clutch for the 225 was like 10 inches so, I had the flywheel machined flat. It's been a long time so, I don't really remember my reasons for doing it.

    Like was said on many flywheels the lip centers the pressure plate. The alignment tool centers the friction disc, not the pressure plate assembly. Unless they've been machined off all the Jeep 225 flywheels I've seen have had that lip. Doesn't mean all did, just all the ones I've seen and I've seen quite a few. Regarding the 231 flywheels, there are lots of versions of those. The one in the '59-5 is from a Chevrolet Monza and accepts a 10 1/2" clutch disc and pressure plate. Some are recessed, some are flat, some are actually raised in the friction surface depending on application.

    The recessed area is 12.5" in diameter.

    Nickmil - thanks. I thought that the bolt holes would determine the position of the pressure plate as in any other flywheel.

    I'm with Nick - all the 225 fly wheels I have seen had the lip. Never charged more for surfacing that over a flat one. Now the 231s - all over the place on those in size clutch etc that would fit. I convert them all to the 225 fly wheel at any rate :)
