I was looking up the part numbers for a 74 starter (DL3207) and a 79 starter (DL3209) at autozone. I have a 74 starter and want to put it in a friends 79 258 motor (he has no money and I have extra starters). I couldn't imagine what the difference is. The only thing I can see is the 74 starter weighs around 2 lbs more. Does anyone know what the difference is and if it would work?

I don't see why not, someone else might chime in though. The part numbers for the ring gears match up so no issue there.

It should work, I have put a 98 TJ motor in mine and the TJ starter bolts went into the T15 tranny no problem

It should bolt up. The drives are the same (9 tooth) and the 2 lb diff is probably due to one being a HD unit.
