I'm installing a new clutch, and the throw out bearing doesn't seem to fit on the sleave? seems a bit tight. Is it a press fit? Didn't want to just hit it with a hammer....

Yeah, don't force it on, it's supposed to slide on the shaft, that is how they work, you ended up with the wrong TO bearing somehow.

Ah crap. Thanks for the info.

My Brother came over to help today (he's been restoring older cars for years and I THOUGHT i was putting the motor back in) he noticed the machinist forgot (?) to machine the flywheel, and I'd installed the friction disk backwards....and one of the U joints I'd replaced was in backwards.....I'm feeling a little stupid today!

Just back off, take a beer break and get to it later. Stupid spells happen to us all. I would be totally embarrassed to admit to some of the things I have done in rebuilds... Good luck in your clutch replacement.

HAHA! ya that's exactly what I did! I sent a message to Mike at Kaiser (he sold me the kit) and I'm waiting to hear back. I think I'll resume next weekend.

The T/O bearing does indeed press onto the sleeve. The sleeve rides/slides freely on the front bearing retainer.
The bearing should NOT fit loosely on the sleeve.

My '62 CJ-5 doesn't have a sleeve, and I have never changed out a T/O bearing in any car I have owned that had one. Was this only for certain years? You're making me wonder if something was missing in my Jeep. Clutch seems to work fine since I replaced it. Please let me know what you know...

The throw out bearing itself is just a round, enclosed bearing that has a flat front surface. It is pressed on to a sleeve that the clutch fork pushes against to disengage the clutch. The throw bearing pushes against the pressure plate fingers and the flat surface spins with the pressure plate. I'll bet the original poster is calling the bearing retainer a sleeve. Unless of course he truly ordered just the bearing. :)

Of course after rereading his post I'm wrong in my thoughts.

Just to avoid confusion I went out side and took a photo.
The old part is on the left and the new parts that won't go together (unless if force them) are on the right.

The bearing presses onto the sleeve/carrier as stated.

The Obvious as many here have already mentioned : Picture on Left is the unit combined............Pictures on the Right are the two pieces prior to assembly..........Picture in middle is the Bearing carrier sleeve......the (ID) Inside diameter of that bore has to be larger than the (OD) Outside Diameter of the input shaft collar or Candlestick that mounts to the front of the transmission that the sleeve and bearing assembly rides on ( somewhere around +.010-.015 )............The Bearings ID by itself is of no consequence since it rides on the bearing sleeve............The bearing needs to be pressed on that sleeve...........The OD of the sleeve and ID of the Bearing are an interference fit.............maybe .0005-.0015 ............check the fit before you press these parts together. If the part numbers are the same on the bearing and sleeve you should be OK..............No Press..........A large Vise should work on that particular Item.......freeze the sleeve overnight and get the bearing up to say 85-90 degrees.........do not use anything hot enough to melt the grease inside the bearing, Out in the Hot sun for a few hours should do it.

OK, mine came already pressed onto the sleeve, so I viewed it as one part. I am breathing a sigh of relief now... Thanks...

That is generally what you get when you ask for one......a whole unit ready to install. Obviously it is cheaper to buy just the bearing and reuse the old sleeve.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I did the sun/freezer thing and it pressed on without a problem.

Don't forget to install the carrier spring or that new bearing won't last very long..

Yes, thanks, In fact it took a bit to figure out where that went, but it's all in now!
