I have an odd vibration and grinding noise coming from the vicinity of the transmission. Intermittent, only seems to happen after I've been driving the Jeep for a while (I have not noticed it when cold, only after driving.) The sound is hard to describe but it sounds to me like metal on metal like a bad bearing.

Happens when clutch is disengaged (clutch pedal pushed to the floor) at idle, for example at traffic lights. I can make it go away by shifting to neutral, let up on the clutch pedal and then push it back to the floor. It is definitely a grinding sound that can be heard and felt through the floor board.

My guess is throw out bearing (Omix-Ada one.) Another guess would be a broken clutch disk, like perhaps a weak or busted spring...? The only other thing I think it could be is transmission shaft but I think that would present itself while driving as well as clutch disengaged. Throw out bearing sounds more likely but I wanted to bounce the idea off you guys.

Clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bushing all new with less than 500 miles.

    Thanks for the help!

Based on your description my first guess is T/O bearing.

sounds like that to me as well...if you get the sound when in gear and driving down the road then maybe not but if as you describe when stopped at light with clutch pushed in, then TO bearing.

If you get the noise with moderate clutch pedal pressure while driving then T/O. If you get it only with fully depressed pedal then I suspect disk.

This part bugs me, usually the sound won't or can't be made to go away, and feeling it through the floor board sounds more like some vibration deal going on.

If the whole setup is omix-ada, then you probably are looking at spending a bunch. Because you need to replace all that omix-ada crap and get the good stuff.

Me too, that's why I am kinda' thinking pilot bushing. When it gets into neutral and the clutch goes down again with no noise the pilot is not forced to stop completely and things are suddenly quiet, but they will often offer up a little extra grind when you do put it in gear, sometimes, but not always accompanied by the noise as soon as it's back in gear. Usually a dry, grinding or squeeling noise. If the clutch it coming apart it will behave the same way but the racket will return as soon as it drops into gear. Don't know if it's right or wrong but I try to soak the bushing in motor oil overnight before installation.

Thanks everyone for the replies. The part about making it go away by releasing the clutch pedal bugs me as well as well as it being so intermittent and only presenting itself after driving for a while.

This winter, I will tear it down and replace all of the Omix-Ada stuff with quality parts. That alone may solve the problem.
